Hi, I'm not too much of an expert when it comes to this kind of thing so maybe one of you guys might be able to help. I have a friend who is wanting to purchase a Laptop and then use it to access the Internet at his home. He also wants to use it at his girlfriends house. Basically would he have to set up his connection as usual and what would need to be done so he can use the phone line it the other house. Or is he better with a wireless system and with a wireless system can you access the internet anywhere? Any help would be much appreciated.

I use nothing but a laptop now and most of them come with built in wireless systems, but with wireless systems you have to have a Broadband connection.... it won't work with dial up.
If he wants a truly portable situation then it will depend a lot on his ISP.
At home and at work I have Broadband (At work my employer supplies it) and use the wireless connection...But it doesn't work over great distances.
But my ISP along with supplying the broadband, also supplies a toll free dial up number for North america. This way I can hook into a phone line anywhere.
So, how well connected you can get depends a lot on your ISP.

you can use wireless with 56k,isdn and adsl
just use ics with the first two
i can use all 3 with my laptopxp pro 2.4gz pent 4 1gz ddr400ram 120GB Hard drive nvida 128mbx8 video card asus ps4800 mainboard wireless networked dvd+/-rw NO PAGE FILE

doing it now
if you read it properly wireless conected through ics
theres no such thing as cant you can do anythingxp pro 2.4gz pent 4 1gz ddr400ram 120GB Hard drive nvida 128mbx8 video card asus ps4800 mainboard wireless networked dvd+/-rw NO PAGE FILE

That's not what I mean...,
Your wireless connection depends on a transmitter|receiver of some kind (router or otherwaise) in the area creating what people call a "bubble"... they're most common in airports and universities...and of course, your home. But these bubbles DON'T OPERATE ON 56K MODEM DIAL UP. You can do what ever you want in your home... but if you READ the question he is asking about a truly "portable" situation which of course is an actual phone line. What's he supposed to do...set up his own bubble where ever he goes???

set both of your connections up
and check at the girlfriends house you might already be inside someone elses bubble and use thier bandwith
providing that bubble is an open network without encription and passwordsxp pro 2.4gz pent 4 1gz ddr400ram 120GB Hard drive nvida 128mbx8 video card asus ps4800 mainboard wireless networked dvd+/-rw NO PAGE FILE
