My HP Pavilion a1710n mouse would also intermittently freeze. The keyboard would still work somewhat when this happened where I could hit Alt to highlight the file menu etc., but to unfreeze the mouse, I would have to power off the computer, and many times had to power off, and then unplug the computer for say 30 seconds. I opened the bottom of the mouse and cleaned out the cat hair from the rollers, but that didn't fix the freezing problem. I looked for help on the internet, and ran a free registry scan/fix program plus looked and downloaded updates from HPs website, but nothing helped. I ended up switching from the standard mouse (PS2 ?) to a USB mouse (I had two unused USB ports on the back of the computer), and that fixed the problem!!!! The USB mouse (a used Logitech MX500 that I got for $5 that uses a light on the bottom of the mouse instead of the rollerball) is also much much smoother than the old standard HP PS2 mouse. If you're using a PS2 mouse, then try a USB mouse - they're pretty cheap. Good luck!! - Jim
