Laptop Freezes On Toshiba Bootup

My problem is that when i start my laptop everything turns on as far as i know ... The fans the lights the screen ... Within 3 seconds of start up it bootup stops. I have the options on the bottom with F12 and F2 when i press F2 it says please wait ... Nothing happens ... I didn't install anything new prior to this happening. The laptop is around 3 years old. It has been awesome up to here. Any ideas ? Concerns ? Please let me know. This sucks!

Okay ... well maybe i'll go to best buy tomorrow and pick up a universal battery ... you can return those if it's not the battery ... any other ideas? thank you for your input also ... i was able to get into the system utilities once ... but not the boot menu ... Pressing ESC gave me my specs. Do you still think it's the battery ? ?

I think so. But without being able to check it myself I can't say for sure.
Some laptops can boot without the battery in place. Is your like that?

yeah i can take the battery out, keep it plugged in and it turns on and tries to boot.
