Ok, I was having some wireless problems with my Toshiba Satellite A30 laptop. I couldn't get it fixed so desided to do a recovery all went well. Then tried the wireless again and still nothing...installed the d-link Airplus driver to try and see if that one would work ...but nothing so thought maybe something had not installed right so thought I would do another recover. Now I have bigger problem part way throguh the recovery I got a Error message which said "Error # 1802 Imagefile invalid. I stoped the recover turn the machine off because I couldn't do anything now when I turn it on it starts to boot then I get this message.....Invalid partition table . Anyone have any idea what I have done???
Thanks for any help

If the partition table is corrupted you have serious problems. The partition table is the foundation of the hard drive. Normally it means starting from the absolute beginning.
Repartitioning the drive
Formatting the drive
Reinstalling windows. There are some file recovery programs out there like 'Lost and Found' and 'Easy Recovery Pro'. Partition Magic might be worth looking into.

The last time I corrupted my partition table I used ULTIMATE BOOT DISK. It helped me to recover 3 out of the 4 partitions that I lost. It's free for the download.

The reason for the "invalid partition table" error is that recovery failed before it completed. This is the problem you need to solve. Don't bother trying to recover files or partition tables from the hard drive directly. What are you running recovery from - a restore CD?

Yes I'm trying to run from a product recovery CD but it won't let me. Sorry if I didn't explain that right not to good with this computer stuff yet. Thanks

When you say "it won't let me", is that because you get the same "Imagefile invalid" error each time you try to run the recovery CD?
The most likely reason for that to occur is your computer failing to read the CD. Try cleaning the CD, and inspect it for any obvious damage. Run it again. Report back here :)

ok cleaned the CD and am ready to put it in. When the boot menu comes up should I be going to 1.+hard drive or 2. CD-Rom/DVD Drive.
I'm also now getting a peeping every few minutes.. thanks again

Ok do I feel stupid.....figured out what the peeping was.......Do I have to Tell you? lol my power had been unplug and it was telling me battery was dieing..gggrrrr

So yeah....power is important :) Maybe the laptop powered off in the middle of restoration last time.
Anyway - you want option #2.

Thanks Jimminy, I now have it recovered and its working but still no wireless. So back to square one with the wireless that is why I formated in the first place was to see if it would start but nope. Any Ideas on this?
Its has a built in wireless but I can't get it to work....also have a d-link external card that is not working either. thanks so much for your help so far.

When you say "no wireless", what exactly isn't working? Are the drivers not installed? There would be one or more yellow exclamation marks in the device manager if this were true. Or are you just having trouble connecting to an access point? Something else, maybe? Please provide specific details about the symptons of your problem. "It doesn't work" doesn't provide enough information to arrive a useful solution.

Hi, I can't connect to the internet I guess is what I'm trying to say. It has a built in wireless that I have never been able to use. So I bought a external card. I just followed what the CD said and installed the drivers then shut down and inserted the D-link Airplus card, when computer is turned on New Hardware is found comes on and I follow the install from there and then it says can't find network controller. Thats seems to be where I'm stuck.

Do you have a wireless router or access point? You need one, or access to one, to get on the Internet. The wireless adapter alone isn't sufficient. And simply not being able to get on the Internet isn't necessarily an indication that the wireless adapter is not working properly.

Hi again, yes I have a wireless router my other 3 computers are running off of it. A built in wireless and I also have an external card because I wasn't able to get the other to work.
With the computer off and inserting the card it comes up and says new hardware found and I go through the find new hard ware and get the message can not find software.

>>I wasn't able to get the other to work
Is that because the card is not installed correctly (drivers missing, e.g.) or for some other reason? You need to provide specifics if you want good advice. "It doesn't work" is not very specific :)
Is the driver CD that came with the card in your CD drive at the time? Do you use the found new hardware wizard to browse to the drivers' location on the CD?
What operating system is the laptop running?

Hi Jimminy, sorry I don't know how to tell if the drivers are working or not as I said I'm not that good at this computer stuff.I do know there is no Yellow exclamation marks in the device manager.
I have tried to turn the computer on with CD in and with CD out and get the same message after found new hardware. Its a Toshiba Satellite A30 Running windowsxp home.
Hope that helps you a little more. Thanks again

The restore CD will install all necessary drivers for onboard hardware - this includes the wireless adapter. If, after completing restore, there are no yellow exclamation marks it is reasonable to assume that the laptop's built in wireless adapter is installed correctly. For the sake of simplicity, remove the add-in card and ignore it for now.
Please describe in detail the steps you have taken to try and connect the laptop to your wireless router.

I have done nothing to try and connect the builtin since the format as I have no idea what to do. It was a tech that tried before the format and he couldn't get it to work. but its all clean now and I have done nothing except try the wireless card.

Ok. Sounds simple enough.
In your system tray there should be an icon for the wireless connection. If you're not sure which one it is, hover the mouse over all of them until you find it.
right click on the icon, select "view available wireless networks". The one associated with your wireless router should be there. Select it, and click on "change advanced settings" if you need to setup a WEP or WPA key - which you probably do.
If any of the above steps fail, stop immediately. Post back with which step failed, and what the results were of attempting the step. Please do not attempt to format your drive again, install any other software or drivers, etc. Based on the information you have provided so far none of that is necessary and may actually introdce new problems.
Oh, and kick that "tech" in the shin. I sure hope he didn't charge you for his "services".

Ok I have 2 icons with the little TV on the task bar.........one says local area connection ...a network cable is unplugged ..the other says same thing but when I right click is says
auto Switch
wireless LAN access Area

ladybe, I recommend you start a new topic for this. More people are likely to read a new topic than are probably still reading this one. As long as you state your problem clearly - connecting to a wireless router; don't confuse the issue with the restore problems you had earlier - you should get plenty of help.
