OS: XP Home
CPU/Ram: Celeron
Product: Toshiba Satellite A85 S10
Comment:

Toshiba Satellite A85 S107 has the following message:

"Windows Root>\System32\NTOSKRNL.exe.
Re-install a copy of the above file."

Can't get into Safe Mode or Setup and it will not boot to cd rom.

Took out the HD and it's readable as a slave.

Put it back in and now getting the following message:

For Realtek RT8139(X)/8130/810X PCI FAst Eathernet Controller V2.13 (020326)

PXE-E61:Media Test Failure, Check cable
PXE-M0F: Existing PXE ROM

Did I screw something up when I took out the HD, battery.......?

Remove the drive and copy your data to another computer.

Then, boot to the XP CD (change the CD to the first boot device if necessary) and then run an XP Repair.

Just a note: you can Google that error and find lots of hits.

I tried the "Restore disk" and although the cd rom is working it won't boot to it and I can't get to the BIOS to change anything.

I did Google and got a bunch of hits on but all had to do with getting onto the computer which I can't do.

This my friends and he did change out the keyboard last week.

I wonder if it's not working.

Doesn't work. However, the owner, my friend, I think, replaced the keyboard about a week ago.

So when did the error message start? Replacing the keyboard would have nothing to do with the error you're receiving. Why was the keyboard replaced? Find out for sure what happened and in the order it did. Then we can help. More details are always good.

He lost a couple of keys and decided to replace the keyboard which he did.

Then he was trying to share files between his desktop and laptop and ended up calling M$ and Toshiba in India.

Then the computer quit working properly (not sure exactly what) and he tried "System Restore" and then he got the first error message.

More pieces of the puzzle.

The HD wasn't seated properly so the second message is gone and we're back to "Windows Root>\System32\NTOSKRNL.exe.
Re-install a copy of the above file."

Also the keyboard only works intermittently but a usb keyboard does work.

Even though I can get into Setup and change the boot order it does not see the Restore CD. I also tried a WinXP cd.

Now I would like to see if I can copy NTOSKRNL.exe from my hd to his while it's "slaved".

I can copy the file from my hd but there's no option to "paste" on his. I'm in the CAB files if that makes any difference.
