I have bought a 2nd hand compaq evo laptop, which came with a floppy and cd rom attachment. It picks up the floppy fine but when I change it over for the cdrom it picks it up as a floppy?
Any ideas?

Regards
dave

Are you changing over with the laptop turned off ?
Some laptops are hot-swappable, and others need to be powered down before swapping.

Hi dave

If you are still seeing the floppy drive icon in My Computer and not a CDROM icon, then I would think that the CDROM has not connected properly in the bay.

When you swap, are you giving the CDROM pack a good whack to make sure it connects with the pins inside the laptop bay ?
And, make sure it is not upside down!
(I've done this myself !!!)

Good luck!

hi Krystyna

Still no joy, tried what you mentioned and still the same. I have power running to the cdrom as I can eject it.
The floppy drive is always present in my computer and works when connected but when you change to cdrom - nothing. I have three cd roms I have tried, there wouldn't be drivers I need to get for the cdrom ?

Dave

Okay Dave

Sounds like a Windows problem, and not a hardware problem.

You don't need CDROM drivers for it to work in Windows 95/98.

FIRST...with the CDROM connected, go to Device Manager.
Do you have a listing for CDROM ?
Do you have any yellow ! next to hard disk controllers ?

NEXT...it might be a registry problem causing the CDROM to not be detected.

Run REGEDIT, and go to...
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CURRENTCONTROLSET\SERVICES\VXD\IOS

If you find NOIDE on the right hand page, DELETE the entry.

NEXT NEXT...sometimes DOS drivers cause Windows to hiccup and not detect the CDROM properly.

Using Notepad, open your C:\AUTOEXEC.BAT and C:\CONFIG.SYS and copy and paste the contents here.

Might be something in there that I can edit and get you up and running.

Sorry Krystyna, been away for a couple of days but the answer to the first question is there is no yellow exclamation mark.
I will try the other things when I get back from work today.

Thanks for you help on this.

Dave
