Ok guys, my friends got a gateway mt3418 laptop, it had vista on it but it was killing its self and making it slow for its specs (surprise surprise)
I formatted it and got XP Pro on it, all the drivers, etc. Everything works EXCEPT the audio. It apparantly will only work for Vista but I know there has to be a way around it. The company of the drivers for the onboard (he has nothing else of course) is sigmatel, and the exact name of the driver in question that will not work to a code 10 is Sigmatel high def. audio codec and I know it means error on either side so hopefully theres either a way to fix it or get a different but compitable driver for it. Anyone got any ideas? I've already tried realtek audio '97 to no avail, Sigmatels the only one I got it to at least get the codecs/drivers on there to recongize.

Isn't there a drivers disc for the laptop?
Most gateways have them. If so, check on the driver CD and see if they have a driver for XP Pro...I think it may be on there.

Some HELP in posting on Cnet plus free progs and instructions Glad to Help!

No no, if it was that easy I wouldn't be asking on here. The only CD it came with was the Vista OS with built in drivers for it. And Gateway only has a Ethernet driver for it that can run on xp, nothing more. So I need to find a way around it or a compatible driver.

All I can say here is that you must not be interested in winning friends and influencing people here at Computing.net with the type of smart remark you made to XpUser4Real,("If it was that easy I wouldn`t be asking on here") not a thanks for trying to help, or anything. Now tell me how is XpUser4Real supposed to know the limits/excess of your computing knowledge? He is someone taking the time to try to help, and you give no respect. There is an old saying "Everyone likes a little a**, no on likes a smart a**, of which I believe you are the latter.

"It apparantly will only work for Vista but I know there has to be a way around it". Not necessarily.

Some hardware manufacturers are NOT making their items to be compatible with XP. That's just a fact.

It's prudent to ensure that drivers exist for XP before removing Vista.

Life's more painless for the brainless.

"Sigmatel high def. audio codec" like other OEM Manufactures Gateway may modify the driver to suit.

Have you tried SiW or HWINFO to identify the Audio Chipset ?

Ok, thanks Jen for your reply, as my biggest fear could rear its head if you're right, I just keeping thinking I can convince myself theres a way around it however its always been nagging me in the back of my head that this vista-only crap would ruin it. Thanks WebsWonder, I've never heard of those programs but I'll give it a try. And to Ike Peters, I've been for about 2 years, with a very similar user name and I had to make a new one due to my forgetful memory of how exactly to spell it or whatever. Regardless, I've always treated everyone on here whose replied to me with respect and kindness, for your information my first response was not a smart one, I was guessing that he was going to give me a follow up reply to my response and I would thank him there. My response was neutral, however I understand text can be taken in many ways. You happened to see it as negative or condescending, in which its not. I would consider everyone on here smart enough to know about factory cds and the like, however his question was just a formality to make sure I had covered all obvious bases, which is a nice thing to do. Again, I wasn't being mean or a smarta**, as you have only proven to be the mean one here using assumptions and rude remarks upon myself. And what if you don't give me a follow up response, much like XpUser4Real seems to be doing hmm? Then you will always think me to be some high and mighty person and I would always consider you to be a jump to conclusions and find out later guy. So lets just agree to be friends and get over this little senseless quarrel? Oh and thank you for your defending him, which I find funny you didnt even attempt to give me an answer, (if you dont have one thats fine I'm just saying I find it rude for you to barge in here, yell at me and leave)

Didn`t go anywhere, been here the whole time waiting to see a reply from you. And you are right I found your reply to XpUser4Real condescending, but may be that is just my take your reply. XpUser4Real has been around this forum forever, and has helped me many times.Quite honestly I wouldn`t blame him for not responding to this thread anymore. As for myself I am not a Vista user, and do not plan to be after seeing all the problems users are having(many having to do with drivers going from Vista back to XP), thus the reason for not being able to add any Vista/XP driver knowledge to help you with your problem, you must know your limitations. Oh and if I was to give you a piece of advice(take it , or leave it, it matters not to me), you "Never" format a drive without first having all the exact drivers for the new OS onhand, and ready to be installed. That`s it, I`m over it, Oh, I almost forgot, you need not worry, I will always give a follow up response.

I'm sorry my answer (response 1) caused some problems. The reason I suggested that is I have worked on many upgrades to xp and have found that the origional drivers on the drivers disc always work the best, as they are specifically for that machine.

It meant no harm to the poster or anybody and from my experience, sometimes people overlook the basic things.

LTLos3r, I presume you went to the manufacturers site to see about XP drivers?

Ike, I appreciate your kind words. Sometimes we wonder why we try helping certain people by their responses back, but sometimes they don't even realize what they have answered, that's why I like the edit function on the replies.
Have a Happy and prosperous New Year

Thank you Ike and XpUser4Real for your responses. To Ike, XpUser4Real has also answered almost every question I've posted on this forum before, and I have always been satisfied with them regardless if it was the answer I was hoping for. I also am a Xp user, I would never use Vista for the same reasons and then some, for my Dad has Vista from a Gateway computer and I've dealt with the problems firsthand. As for this laptop business, this was all my friends doing, he came over, asked for me to reformat it (since I have the cd), and left afterwards. I thought he had it all under control until the next day when he came back and said he had no idea what to do, which lead me to the Gateway website which lead to my dismay that the only compatible drivers for xp for his laptop was enternet. I spent the next two days searching for drivers that could work. I got every single one except the audio, which I will continue working on tomorrow with the help of WebsWonder's suggestion. (this also answers your question XpUser4Real, I did go to their website to reach a dead end)
If anything he'll go back to Vista thanks to Gateway only giving him the OS disc with built in Vista only drivers.
If I'm lucky we'll find a substitute.
Happy New Year to everyone as well.
