Comment:
I have a laptop of P4 1.8GHz, 128MB and 40GB hd which runs very slow. I wonder. It runs slower than anothe desktop of 128MB Ram, P3 550MHz. There ae no much progarms on it but it runs too slow.
I have tried increasing The Paging to 4086, but still runs slow.

More memory would be your first port of call, 128 really is too small for Xp, despite having a huge pagefile.
When you say slower, do you mean frame-rates, or disk access? if disk access then defragging the drive is always a good call.

The minimum requirements to run Windows XP is 128MB ram. You would need atleast 256MB ram to get acceptable performance and 512MB to get SUPERIOR performance. Also a 1.8ghz Celeron(if you have a celeron) is like a p3 1ghz. I would upgrade the ram to atleast 256MB. Hope this helps

128MB of RAM is the least amount that you can expect XP to run at all. If you go up to at least 256, and preferably 512, you should see a good improvement in speed, especially if you have a lot of things loading at startup or are doing a lot of multitasking or have a lot of services enabled. All sorts of things you can do to speed up performance.

Is you drive an ATA 100 and if so do you have a 80 way cable.
If you only have an old type 40 pin cable it will work but only at ATA 33.
You can tell an 80 pin cable as the connectors are colour coded. Blue, Grey and Black. The Blue connector must plug into the motherboard. With the old 40 way cable it didnt matter which end of the cable plugged into the motherboard.

Then take it to a repair shop and get the ram upgraded, and tell them your problems. They will be more than happy to fix it for you.

Start with adding more memory, 256 or better. Next, do you have any UPDATED antivirus software on your laptop? If not, buy some or run the virus definition updates. Then, run a virus scan. I have experienced many times that it was a virus. How old is your installation of XP?

did you install any software that could cause the slow down? Also, are there tons of software in the background? For what I know, norton antivirus 2004 can cause serious slow down in windows xp.
