Hello, Can anyone explain to me why a laptop would lock-up/freeze when performing complex 3d graphical calculations such as those in displaying today's demanding games (Command and Conquer Generals at 1400X1050X32bit) for example. It is a 3.2 ghz with HT and 1024 mb of 333 ddr ram. In addition it has a Radeon 9600 video card which should be able to handle any and all graphical calculations. Thank you.

Hi marc,
I would suspect the graphics-drivers to be out of date or a need to update the directX version. WindowsUpdate doesn't always have the latest version of graphics-drivers, so check the manufacturer's website instead(also check it for a patch for that game - if any).
You could try disabling or reducing the Video- and Audio-acceleration, and checking whether that solves it.
I do not know whether HyperThreading would present problems. Maybe the Microsoft site has some info on that.
