LAN system tray icon

My Win XP he LAN icon has disappeared for some reason. I have selected "show icon...when connected" in Connections settings area of MS IE. Still no networking icon.

you sure it's not just hidden in the system tray? there should be an arrow to the left of the system tray you can click on. if you want to turn it off, right click on the taskbar and go to properties. it'll be on a tab somewhere.

Not just hiding. This has happened before. I have forgotten how I got the connection icon back, but I think I had to completely reload Win XP. Just some random something makes the icon cease to show itself. If the networking icon appears, my dial-up connection generates a similar icon right next to it while connected. I can click that dial-up icon to disconnect, rather than wait for Win XP to disconnect when it detects that I am no longer using the internet--can take a couple of minutes. The value of the icon to me is that I can disconnect in a snap.

Go to Control Panel > Network connection > Right-click on LAN connection > Disable connection

I went to Control Panel > Network Connections > (there is nothing listed; no icons for LAN or anything else to disconnect.)
Does the absence of the LAN connection icon here tell me anything? Thanks for any and all further help. -Serobi
