Enable the icon in your network connections if you want to see it.

Right click that LAN icon in Network Connections, then click Properties, then check mark the box to show it.

It won't show in the Taskbar. It will show in the System Tray.

The Glossary in Windows HELP says
Notification Area The area on the taskbar to the right of the taskbar buttons. The notification area displays the time and can also contain shortcuts that provide quick access to programs, such as Volume Control and Power Options. Other shortcuts can appear temporarily, providing information about the status of activities.
