I am connecting to the internet through my network card. But the speed that I am getting is 10mbps. Shouldn't this be much faster? How can I change this, or what am I doing wrong?

There's a good chance that your ISP only gives you a 10Mbps connection (as was the case on most of the university campus connections I have used).
If you're sure it is supposed to be 100Mbps connection, check that your network card is capable of supporting 100Mbps (though nowadays almost all do support it).
