Lack of volume on laptop after relaoding XP

The machine is working fine after reload aprt from this and the @key and" have are using reverse functions.The normal volume level in windows is not responding at all it is pale in colour.Any thought please

... go to control panel > regional and language options click languages (tab) click> details ... I believe you have US United States keyboard set (?) ... either "add" UK (?) keyboard or use the above dropdown menu to alter. ... or click "key settings" to alter between the two (?) . . .
