Hello, didn't know where exactly to post this since its done it w/ Win XP/2k/ME, but I'm using XP currently so here we go.
This is definitely not a software issue, something HW related.
I have the Klipsch THX 4.1 ProMedia speaker system (base subwoofer/amp and 4 satellites, 1 of which has the volume controls). I'm using a Soundblaster Live! Value sound card, have a ECS K7AMA system board and Athlon XP 1600 proc, 384 megs pc133 ram (those shouldn't matter though, my problem occurred w/ previous system as well). The speakers sound just fine for the most part, but when I adjust the volume on them I get some crackling/hissing. My roommate has the same speaker/soundcard combo and has the same problem, and a couple friends have the same speakers, and we all have the same problems. Otherwise the speakers are fabulous. I was just wondering if there was some sort of weird off-the-wall fix for this or anything. I know I did tech support for Compaq long ago and it seemed as if there was a firmware upgrade for crackling speakers (must've been onboard sound). I just wonder if there is some crazy fix for this? If not its not a big deal, just a small irritant. I've had the speakers for some time so I presume they're not in warranty anymore. I've played w/ volume controls and such w/ no luck also, just to let ya know.
Thanks in advance.

There is a known issue with soundblaster live! cards and the VIA 686B northbridge chipset. If this is what you have, then that is your problem. Do a search on google about this issue. There is some kind of patch that has worked for some. The patch has been known to overheat systems though. I don't know where do get it but if you search you can probably find it easily. I hope this helps a little!

Bob, thanks for the info. I do have the Soundblaster, but I have the Ali somethingorother chipset, may still have something for it. I'll keep on searching.

I have the same speakers.. there was originally an issue with the Klipsch v2.400/4.1 with the pre-amplifier. It had an audible hiss and was crackly when you changed the volume etc. If your preamp has a headphone jack on the side and a power button, then you have a new preamp and then your problem is something different.. but if you dont have the headphone jack and power button.. then you probably have a crummy preamp.. you can order a new one from klipsch.. its called the CP-1 I think.

yes, i heard something about that as well. No power/headphone jack on mine. Guess it is the crap preamp :(
Oh well, I'll live w/ it I guess.

this is an XP/Ali problem fer me ... same deal its even worse i get the hissing everywhere not just in vol control
