OS: xp
CPU/Ram: thinkpad 600e
Comment:

I have been trying to get a Thinkpad 600e ready to sell. I used killdisk to get rid of everything on the hard drive. It was successful. I came to install OS (xp) and booted =to cd rom. Trouble is all I get after a black screen is another screen with loads and loads of little boxes in it. There are a few flashing arrows and at the bottom of the screen is F1 thru to F12. Can anyone tell me where its gone wrong please? I cant install OS. Thanks

almost sounds like the bios screen after it couldn't find the hard drive or cdrom

Its a legitimate install CD XP home. The fact is though I cant get rid of this darned screen that has come up since running killdisk. It would appear I cant do anything without dealing with that issue first??? Many thanks

Wanderer is correct.
Using Killdisk was a mistake Bridiebee. You should have just run the IBM restore software and it would have wiped out all your personal information and restored the system to the way it came from the factory.

There 'was' a small partition on the drive that held the restore image.

You might try the IBM web site for help.

Ok thanks though I have done this on a T22 with absolutely no problems. Any more ideas would be welcome.

after running killdisk you need to

1= partition the hard drive
2=format the drive
3=install windows

Hi
Done all that. Actually managed to install win 98. Then I upgraded with xp pro. I installed word and excel but noticed that there seemed a lack of drive space. Its only a 6GB hard drive. Went into system and saw this:
2.00GB Fat in a blue box 4GB Unallocated in a black box. Only a few MB of space left?? Can I do anything about this without having to reinstall from scratch please? Thanks

I assume that you have Microsoft (not IBM) win98 and WinXP install CDs.

You need to run killdisk again.

Install WinXP (use the Win98 CD for proof of prior ownerwhip of Windows). It will create a 6gb partition.

Hi
I would do that but the first time I tried an OS install after killdisk I put the xp disk in and it said "invalid disk, press any key"!!! If I run killdisk I take it that I have to run fsdisk and format all over again?? Is this where maybe I went wrong last time? For some reason it didnt want to accept my Win XP disk (Microsoft) when it was freshly formatted. Its a legitimate OEM disk. If you could just advise before I go for it I'd be grateful. Thanks

As I said in response #9, I assumed that you had a 'Microsoft' WinXP install CD.

An OEM CD is an entirely different matter and I am afraid that I can't help with that. Maybe someone else can.

An install using a 'Microsoft' WinXP CD will partition and format a drive, if it hasn't already been done.

I'm not familiar with an IBM 600E. I'm afraid that I don't know what you are referring to.

Could you tell me if there is a way to give xp pro the whole 6GB from the desktop and cd rom? As I cant do this in dos when cd rom wont boot first. I need to give xp pro ( retails disk) the whole of the hard drive space.
Thanks

Well, you could start all over bridiebee.

Run killdisk.
Run fdisk and use a win98 startup floppy to repartition the drive to the full 6gb.
Then redo the win98 install and XP upgrade.

I really don't understand how you managed to do the XP upgrade the last time, but evidently you were successful.

Have you considered only installing Win98?

Last time I installed windows 98 then just stuck the xp pro disc in and installed as upgrade. I wish it could be xp pro only but not sure if this ispoosible? Can you suggest where I might have gone wrong before on partition please? I thought I did everything right and wondering if it was the upgrade that messed up the partitions?

Thanks
