Seeing as you are running XP on an HP with 512RAM, I suspect you may also already have a 'multimedia keyboard', so... Of course, if you don't, that might have been relevant to mention in your post.

Do give XpUser's suggestion a try, but it's probably just as easier & more practical to get a $20 multimedia keyboard .... but then again, it doesn't seem like you really need one -- long term -- that bad .... who knows?
I have a multimedia keyboard here & to be honest I seldom use the volume dial or mute button on the keyboard myself & many a times; forget it is even there. I find the volume control console (in Windows) or the speaker knob more natural.
