I've done a lot of googling, and I've also searched this forum, but I'm baffled as to why my mouse and keyboard stop working when its loading the OS. They both work on startup, but as soon as it reaches the xp loading screen, the keyboard 'num' 'caps' and 'scroll' lights flash on and stay that way, with the keyboard itself becoming completely unoperational. The mouse also does not work at all with the light beneath it (its an optical mouse) not switching on when moved. This all started when I done a system restore. I repaired XP, which took incredibly long (about 6 hours when it should have taken under 1 hour), and then it all worked fine. I went on to install SP2 and once I restarted the PC, the same thing happened again! Mouse and keyboard didn't work so I couldn't log on to the PC. So I repaired XP once again and I'm back on to my user account. What I'm afraid of now is turning off or restarting my PC, because I'm quite sure the same thing will happen again. I don't want to attempt a system restore either as that is what started the problem in the first place. I have tried all the startup options of going into safe mode, last known configuration, etc. none of which help my situation.
I need all the help I can get. Thank you.

could you be a bit more specific ... usb or ps/2 input devices?

Hi, both keyboard and mouse are usb.
By the way, I took a look at my device manager and noticed an exclamation mark next to the following:
Intel(R) 82801DB/DBM SMBus Controller - 24C3
Microsoft System Management BIOS Driver
Intel(r) 82801DB/DBM USB 2.0 Enhanced Host Controller - 24CD

ok, then install service pack 2 and the latest drivers for your mainboard from the manufacturers web site

The problem is when I install SP2 I have to restart at the end... and by restarting the problem starts over again. I'm going to risk it and go for a system restore.

no ps/2 connectors on your mainboard? if you can use ps/2 mouse and keyboard temporarily you should be fine.
or install the latest drivers and THEN upgrade to SP2

just make sure you have all devices properly installed, get rid of those exclamation marks.

BIOS may have an option for Legacy USB, this will enable the KB and Mouse, even though SP2 is not installed...

If the KBoard works during the POST screens then the legusy USB device must already be enabled.
Enter the BIOS screens and look to see that PnP OS is enabled. If not, set to Enable and try again. If problem still persists then Re-Enter the BIOS and look for an entry called "Reset configuration data". Set to Enable for ONE boot cycle. This should allow Windows to sort out whatever resource conflicts are keeping the hardware from working. If that also fails, I recommend getting hold of PS2 devices. They should work OK. Boot to Safe Mode and remove all KBoard and Mouse entries in control panel and reboot. Then retry your USB devices.

I think OtheHill's suggestion will be the very thing we all need to do in the near future. Gateway & Dell ships PCs without PS/1 ports :-(

I'm currently using the laptop as I am reinstalling XP on my PC. The problem is with SP2, because I found out that only when restarting my PC after SP2 was installed that this problem arose. I think I will hold back from installing SP2, and stick with SP1. As for entering the BIOS, I can't, because my Compaq evo d510 doesn't allow me to.
P.S. It takes me around 6 hours to reinstall XP, when it should take around 40 minutes. Does anyone know why?

Your post is promoting an illegal use of a Microsoft product and therefore against forum rules.

Hm well I don't know what post 13 is all about but I can say the problem was solved. After installing SP2 my keyboard and mouse would lock up on booting the PC after the installation.
I have installed SP1a and I no longer have this problem, so the problem was with SP2. Maybe my computer or some drivers weren't compatible with it, who knows.

I guess it is possible that SP2 and your hardware could have issues. The more likely explanation is that your system wasn't clean or you had something running when installing SP2. You might want to run spyware and virus checks. Adaware and Spybot Search & Destroy are excellent spyware utilities. There are a number of good free virus scanners available. Find the mentioned utilities here: http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/
