Keyboard Lag in XP Pro

When I'm either online or offline when using either a chat application or a word processing application (even notepad), I can type maybe 10 characters then get a lag, then 10 more then another 1 second lag. This just continues on and on. Anyone know what may be going on and how to fix it?

Check and see if you have all the Windows Updates, and then look through your Event Viewer to see if anything is being logged. After that, start looking at what programs are running in the background (maybe an antivirus program is messed up)....
