Hi, I hope you can help me.
I had a problem installing SP2 on my machine. I was installling it through a automatic update and when installed, I was asked to reboot. Once the computer rebooted, I had no use of the keyboard and mouse.
As The original install of XP was fairly recent, i decided to re install windows and format the drive too, as i couldn't figure out the problem.
During a fresh install of Win XP Pro, once you get to the Regional Language options(The first set of options on XP setup) the mouse fails to show a pointer and the keyboard fails to work. I have tried reinstalling again and again, but no use, the same problem. I have had a relatively new motherboard in my computer, the keyboard works fine in bios and in the initial blue screens of the begining of and XP install, but once the drive is formatted and Xp is preparing to install, I have no use of the keyboard and mouse, so i cannot continue.I am a student starting a Diploma in computers in a few days time and need my computer working as soon as possible. If anyone can help, please reply. I have a limited knowledge of computers, so all help will be appreciated.
Thanks
Nick

Check your mouse is working properly by using it in another PC.
If it works, then boot your machine up without the mouse plugged in. You can set Windows up with ease without a mouse. Just use the tab keys.
If that works, then your mouse is conflicting with your keyboard. Check your BIOS to see if there are any manual settings for the mouse, something like PS2 mouse function control. Make sure they’re set to auto.
If you have a PS2 mouse (round plug with male pins), get a USB one and see it that helps. If you’re using a USB mouse, change the port it's sitting in

Morning,
If your keyboard and mouse are USB, try borrowing another ps2 mouse and keyboard. When I was reformating, I had to use my old ps2 mouse on my computer. When I was reformating my wife's computer, I had to use both an old PS2 mouse and keyboard to make things work. Then after reinstall and/or update, I could change back to the USB devices.
Same thing happened during SP2 install. Had to use the old ones again apparently because the USB ports will not function until installation is complete.
Note: be sure to check USB port settings in the BIOS afterwards as they go back to Default settings.
Just my 2 cents,
XDon
