I test alot of hardware e.g. video, sound cards, and memory for a local used computer shop. Unfortunatly we are also running XP which keeps asking for a activation code about every three or four times of switching cards. Why do I need to keep reactivating XP. It only happens when I switch the cards. Reactivating after 20 times or so gets to be a pain. Its not my call to go back to 98, or I would. My boss likes XP, but he is not the one reactivating one or two times a week, therefore he does not care. any help?

As I understand it, XP checks the hardware, and if it finds anything different, it requires you to re-activate it. You are allowed to change your hardware a certain number of times per year.
This is an anti-piracy attempt by microsoft...your XP thinks it was installed in a new computer (like if you create an .iso)
XP doesn't like hardware changes, tell your boss to go back to 98. If he likes XP, he should keep it on his personal computer.

lifes a bitch and you are being paid hourly
just consider it part of your job,its not like your paid peace meal and only after testing and repairing each one,so you spend a few minutes a week reactivating, your boss is paying for the time spent

What a load of rubbish, XP asks for re-activation after every SIX hardware changes. The fact that you keep changing hardware is the cause of the problem. Why oh why don't you people check the Microsoft page for this sort of problem (of your own making).

I dont have an answer to your question. I dont know of a workaround for this issue. You could always give MS a call. Give them your story and see if they share a secret. Doesnt hurt to try.
If your going to be swapping hardware you should get rid of xp. What does your boss's liking of XP have to do with your test gear? I assume you have a rig just for testing? I dont think it will kill him to have one box not running XP.
twizzlers got a point. You are being payed for your time. If you get tired of digging holes just to fill them back up you might start looking for a new gig. If its one thing ive learned you will never be able to change some peoples minds. If these people are your boss your headed for trouble.

If XP pro does not have activation, then i will see if he will go to that. I appreciate all of your answers

Only XP Pro Corp has no activation requirement. While any distro of XP can be 'added to' to become a 'corp' version, I doubt your boss is going to get into pirating his own software..
There is a way around this, but it's almost as tidious... But the following will help, ummm, eventually ;)
Reset the config/setup type of computer to laptop. This will follow a smaller number of devices that relate to the activation agreement. Save the wpa.dbl from the Windose\system32 dir to floppy and label it for device content. After you've saved a few config.s you will be calling less
