I am using dial-up to connect to the internet and my connections for some reason do not last more than five minutes before it's disconnected. I have tried different ISPs and the same thing happens, I'm not sure if there something in my settings that's causing this. PLEASE HELP, this is getting annoying.

One other thing is that my internet explorer doesn't work, whenever clicked on it either says the page cannot be viewed while offline (even though I am on the internet) or that the pages cannot be found. Please give me any suggestions on correcting this too please. Thanks

Melissa, it's been a while since I have dealt with a dialup modem, however, as I remember when this type of thing started it was time to start thinking about a new modem.
I tend toward this conclusion because:

>I assume that your access was nice & normal before, and it "just started doing it";
>you have used several different ISPs and have the same problem. I assume also that you have called their tech support with no joy.

Dialup modems are cheap now. Go to Newegg.com, you can find one under $25. They are easy to install, and XP pretty well auto-configures them. Don't spend over $30 on one, and I am positive you can get one for approx. $15-$20.

I would repeat, talk to your ISP.

When I used to have this problem, it was caused by a timeout in my email program. Not only did I tweak the settings, but I made sure my mail was checked automatically every 8 minutes. That told the computer gods I was still there.

Ranch,

Do you think something could be wrong with the modem even if the device manager says the modem is working correctly. Please advise.

To Salgof,
If I have tried using different ISP and continue having the same problem, I don't believe it is a problem withthe ISP. Any other suggestions. Please advise.

Try resetting your TCP/IP. Your internet provider should be able to guide you through this step. It solved the problem I was having.

Well, like I said, if the modem is in the process of going out, Windows could report it as still good. The fact that you can load into the internet shows it is working, but it can't hold the connection anymore. With a thing like this, there is no 100% sure answer, but the modem is the most likely suspect in this case. Be much easier if the stupid thing would just die altogether!

I highly doubt its the modem. But possible. Melissa does it go off after a certain time or when your checking something like email in outlook express? Or which email program do u use? First check and make sure idle disconnect is not checked in your internet options. And if your using outlook express for email, make sure it doesnt have checked "hang up after sending and recieving email" ...If your using outlook express its in Tools>options>connection. BTW i work for earthlink. Hope this helps. If it doesnt, need more info. good luck

And u cant say its the modem is the likely suspect when its connecting. And tru the modem saying it is working in the device manager is not a valid claim. That means the modem can communicate with your computer, thats it. It doesnt say if it can communicate with another computer, for example an ISP server. I would say its line noise before anything. Do u notice slower speed when connected, and was there anything changed on the phone line itself(like a splitter or was it moved to a different room), or was the access number for your ISP changed? Any updates installed. Any information will help. If ur still stumped and went over everything i mentioned, keep trying. And if u get a chance try and think back when the problem started occuring.

Chad5150,
Thank you so much for your suggestions. I really appreciate it.

I just got this computer and yes, I did use a splitter (the thing in which you can plug into the phone jack and stick two cords in it) to connect the phone line to my computer. I will try to change this and see if that will cause a change. The only other updates I installed were the regular windows updates. The ISP (RCN) gave me a new access number to try two days ago but the same thing is happening.

The lenght of time the first connection lasts varies (10-30mins), once it disconnects for the first time and I try to reconnect, then it may disconnect anywhere from right away to maybe 5-15 mins later.

Any other suggestions. I will try to make the phone line come directly from the phone jack to see if that will cause a change. I will definitely let you know.

Would you mind giving me your email address, so I can communicate with you directly regarding this. Mine is melissa_7780@yahoo.com.

Getting disconnected intermittently can be caused by a few things one of them as suggested by Chad is having a splitter, also line noises, having your phone cord too long(>6ft) and the most notorious is having the wrong driver installed for the modem.I suspect you know what you are doing from your comment about ruling out the ISP (what are the odd of having the same problems with 2 ISP's even if they are both local). If after going thru the above you still have the same problem you can try another PCI slot for the modem too.Goodluck

Just saw this post, and I know splitters suck! I got mine from walmart and it kept kicking my speed down from 46k to 14-40k. And sometimes it kicked me off, I took it out and *bloop* it went back to a constant good 44-46k.
