I had a corrupt system file similar to http://computing.net/windowsxp/wwwboard/forum/3947.html and I fix it using the solution suggested. Windows XP had to redetect all devices and I had to reinstall some drivers. Now I cannot connect to the internet using my cable modem. The IP address is a generic one, I called the cable modem tech support and they're unable to help me. The only solution they have is to reinstall windows xp. What do I need to do to get a good ip address? I tried repairing the connection under windows xp but it failed. What is in the system file that made it work? How can I regain my network connection? Thanks in advance.

What crappy techs!!
What do you mean by a Generic IP address?? If you mean one in the 169.254.x.x range then your computer cannot reach the server for your ISP that is handing out the IPs. Your ISP should be able to help you with this... but since most tech departments at ISPs have the combined IQ of a rock they may not.
Try uninstalling the NIC, disable any firewall software/hardware, and connect the computer directly to the cable modem if you are running a home network.
Ensure that the link lights on the back of the modem and on your NIC card are on. Try unplugging and plugging in the cables, or give them a little wiggle.
The cable modems can get a little goofed up at times, do make sure the light sequence is normal. Also, try shutting down your computer, then unplugging the power to the cable modem, turn the modem back on and wait for the boot-up sequence to stop and then turn your computer back on. It sometimes helps.
Failing that, gather all of your drivers, Windows CD's and software from your ISP and give them another call. Ask to speak to a Senior Technician if you get any trouble. After all it is their job!!
If you have any probs you can email me :)

Hi, left click Start, click All Programs, click on Accessories, click the Command Prompt. In the Command Prompt box, type this in:
ipconfig/release
after the screen refreshes type this in:
ipconfig/renew
Let me know how it goes.
Bob

When I tried ipconfig /renew this error came up. An error has occured while renewing Local Area Connection 4: An operation was attempted on something that is not a socket. I'm currently not running any network. I'm connected directly to the cable modem using my NIC. My IP is currently 169.254.140.232, it changes everytime I power down and up the cable modem. I have windows 98 on a different partition and the NIC works fine. I can get a valid IP address. I tried setting the IP address manually in winxp using the IP taken from win98 since both should be the same but I couldn't get an address for the DNS address. I know in winxp and 2000, you'd use nslookup but what command would be the equivalent in win98? As for tech support, Road Runner does not support winxp, so I have to solve this on my own. This problem has something to do with that system file, I think. The old system file was 10 MB but the new one is only 4.5 MB.

the question is did you do all three listed parts of q307545 if not go back and run parts 2 and 3 and make certain you pick a restore point date, when the modem was working.

try deleting all network connections that you have, uninstall your NIC and reboot. This will reinstall the NIC, and then setup your connection again.
If you want to try to staticly assign your IP (this may not work with some ISPs) you can get the DNS server address from your win98 partition by going to the command prompt and typing:
ipconfig /all
This should give you all of the information that you need to assign the IP.

NOne of the above ways worked. THe restore point was after the corrupted time, so it didn't work. I tried setting the IP and DNS and it didn't work either. I think I'm doomed to reinstall windowsn xp.

My problem is similar to Q318584 with the difference that my os is windows xp and not 2000. I think my Winsock or TCP/IP stack is corrupt. How can I fix this? I tried the solution suggested by microsoft but it didn't work. I have windows xp, is there a solution for windows xp?

I used the repair feature of the windows xp cd which reinstalls the systems files but to no avail. I'm still getting a 169.xxxxxx IP address. Looks like I have to do a clean install unless someone out there knows how to fix this.

OK, bro. Right click My Network Places, choose properties. In the Network Connections window, there should be an icon for Lan or Broadband. If not, there's your problem. You will have to create one. If so, right click, properties, and remove everything under the general tab. Reboot and let the stack reinstall. Let us know how it goes.
