I have contacted my ISP about this problem, but they can't shed any light on it. So... this is my last resort!
I have no problems connecting into the Internet with my modem, but once I get on in XP pro it boots me off in 2 to 3 minutes.
I know that XP makes all the proper adjustments once you make a connection, but this is frustrating.
I do have Norton products: Firewall and Anti-Virus, but when I disable both I still have the problem.
CAN ANYONE HELP?

Jim,
HI (same name), You may be able to resolve the problem. I hope you do, but my friend had dial up (Like I did until I got cable). She could not stay connected. They have lousy phone service and their lines are not rated for 56k speeds where she lives. That may sound like bull, but I read more than once that's it's possible. So the modem could try to connect at 56k, but then you get bumped. The solution for that is to force the modem to connect at a slower speed like 28.8. I know that's unnacceptable, but bear with me. If you can stay on at 28.8, start bumping up your connect speed until you find the limit. This is only one idea. Here is what helped her. I gave her the proper init string for her Zoom modem and she was able to connect. It would alays negotiate to a slightly lower speed, but it would stay connected. One of the biggest reasons for disconnects on modems is trying to force them to connect at top speed when the lines are not the best (even if it sounds good to your ear, it might not be the best). Here's why. After several attempts they do finally connect. But noise in the line or whatever soon makes it so they can't maintain that speed. So the modem quits and hangs up. Yet a final resort is to use a modem string that lengthens the time before the modem will hang up. It's complicated, but there is a timer in the modem that can be altered. Jim2
