I give up. These things are just too intrusive. I had to install ad blocker and now every time I go somewhere I have to use ctrl to load a web page. That is stupid. I have disabled them and they come right back if I diosble ad blocker. What's next? More crap?

What really irritates me is when I try to copy and paste a section of a post that has a highlighted word in it. You can't do it. The pop up just comes up no matter what.

I agreee Per, these Recent & Related Posts boxes are a pain in the arse.

The Related Posts one is the worst as it get's in the way of reading a long thread.

I cant see why we need it as there is a perfectly good search function at CN. I know things have to be DUMBED DOWN for a lot of posters, but this is ridiculous having these.

I use AD Muncher to get rid of the ads, best money I ever spent...

Hey,

You disabled using the Question Mark them and they still come back up? That's strange. I don't know why that would be happening. Sorry about that.

Another way to definitely disable them is to add the line:
127.0.0.1 ctxt.tribalfusion.com

to your hosts file in the C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC directory. Make sure you save the changed file as "hosts" and not hosts.txt

Justin- Why should I have to cater to the crap you put on here? I guess I could spend more money and more time to satisfy your advertising needs but that is BS!!! It's easier to just leave.

I didn't know about the opt out option. I just tried it. After exiting and returning the ads came back within 30 seconds. Tried it twice with the same results. I am using MFF3.

I'm not sure why, but I don't have any trouble copying and pasting a section of a post that has a highlighted word in it. I start at least one word to the left of the highlighted word .

Man, am I the only one here who use this combo:
Firefox + NoScript + Adblock + Adblock Filterset.G Updater

I haven't seen an ad since I went with this setup. Side note: Adblock is now dead, which saddens me; I liked it more than Adblock Plus.

Even if the optout works the next time you clean your internet files you have to start over again. Why offend people with that crap in the first place?
And yes razor, I could go with all the addons but why? I won't use firefox and that is my choice.

Personally, the ADs don't bother me that much, and it seems to me that there are much fewer than there used to be.
Justin does have to make some money to keep this site going.

The reason I use Ad Muncher, is so I do not have to read crappy foreign adverts that have no interest and or use to me.

If Justin want's to pay me Aus $150.00 a gigabyte to watch all the crappy ads here, I will delete the scripts I use. As this ($150.00 a Gigabyte) is what a lot of Australian ISP's charge for going over your bandwidth quota block.

This is one of the reasons I do not help here as much as I used to...

I agree with otheHill as to being hard to copy/paste with the adds popping up.

I also agree with per and the others as they seem a bit more than intrusive as they just hang in too long....maybe if they shut off immediately after the mouse passes over but they don't...they hang for way too long and it keeps you from reading the rest of the post.

The opt out doesn't work for me....I will try the hosts file and see if it runs ok with it in there.

I had stopped frequenting the site for a long time because the ads made it annoying to deal with, so I agree with per and the others about them making it an unpleasant experience coming here.

I guess I'm one of the lucky ones, as soon as Justin told us about the "opt-out" option, I tried it and haven't seen an ad since. I am using IE7 with the built in pop up blocker on.

I use Firefox with the NoScript extension. That combination (with the addition of a few sites being blocked at my router) takes care of any unwanted intrusions, and not only at CN. I've found that a number of sites are now more to my liking.

The only ad that I ever see on CN, is the orange runtime.org one. Not too intrusive, at all.

"I won't use firefox and that is my choice."

Sorry per, but as I see it, that means it's also your choice to accept these intrusions. A proven solution is available and you choose not to use it.

Please let us know if you found someone's advice to be helpful.

Hey,

The opt-out seems to be working fine for me. The way it works is by setting a cookie, perhaps you guys have something interfering with that?

It should also be noted that you stubborn IE guys can disable Active scripting in IE's Security Settings. It's not as convent as FF's NoScript, but few things in IE are.

"It's easier to just leave."

Maybe that's a good idea if that means you won't be calling people names here anymore.

Like aegis and others, the ads really don't bother me at all and all I'm using is IE7's pop-up blocker.

I don't recall asking anyone about Firefox. That seems to be the answer to any post about using IE from the FF people. As to my calling someone names they shouldn't try to tell me what browser to use or what shirt to wear today. The question was directed at Justin, not the people who post only to see their name on the web.

No offense, but they were just trying to help. Usually when one creates a thread, they are expecting help and suggestions pertaining to the OP's problem or question. If you don't like any of the suggestions, thank them anyway instead of name calling. If the post was directed at Justin, maybe a PM would've been better.

I'm not here to add fuel to a fire but I think we should just ignore the ads. They don't bother me yet. After all, this site isn't cheap to keep running.

As for me, I've said enough. God bless all contributors here on CN!!!

I believe the method used on sites like this is to push the ad envelope until there are many complaints. At which time the fine line between lost ad revenue and lost membership is established. The opt out option is most likely there for us regulars. The issue, as I see it is that the opt out isn't working dependably. If there is a fix I'm sure Justin will implement it.

As far as clearing the browser cache goes, I use CCleaner to do that and you can Exclude items.

What I have done is to clear the cache and then open all sites I wish to exclude. Then run analyze in CCleaner. Whatever comes up I exclude and those cookies will not be removed in the future.

I think you've all missed my point but that doesn't matter. If the ads get worse and start to be bothersome, I'll go somewhere else, no big deal.

The farthest thing I want to do is start an argument, so no further comments from me.

I wonder if the adverts are the reason that there were only six new threads started over night.

I have sympathy to those people who are only able to get dialup for their internet connection.

It used to be bad when I could only use dialup before I got a broadband connection where I live here in Oz.

As for those people saying Justin has to pay for the website. I am a member of a forum here in Oz that does not have adverts at all. There is a unobtrusive link to the web hosting company, which I do not consider a advert.
