I noticed a change to the layout on the forum today and mention that the twin column forums menu now located on the right rather than in single column on the left, overlaps the messages area when viewed using Firefox 3
The overlap does not seem to occur using IE7
The image file didn't load so here's the URL

Hmmm, I'm fine in FF3 and IE6. Nice borders around everything and no overlapping.
My problem is that mouse has been going left here for 6 or 7 years and doesn't want to move to the right.
BTW, my FF3 is a new install (last night) and no plug ins installed.

Thanks Skip.
Did you view the same Post :
http://www.computing.net/answers/wi...It contains a line with a long "search address string" that seems to force the message box to extend into the Advertising/Menu space.
I recall that under the old ( Pre Tom's) era, long strings would simply expand the whole page forcing the ads right and invoking a right/left scrollbar.

Just gettin' ready to edit my response...viewed same post and results are the same as yours.
Seems FF can't deal with OP's copy/paste and resize to fit? IE6 made the entire area a bit wider; same with IE7?
Skip

Yes, same here with ie7, the text has pushed the forums listing box and the weekly poll and recent post boxes outside the width of the page.
Getting the text overlap effect with Opera also.
Like Skip, my mouse decides to move left quicker than I can tell it to go right now. I think it would be easier if everything on the right was pulled over to the left, but I notice computing.net is looking more and more like Tom's page and it would be going against the theme I guess.

Just to add that on my FF3 the text in the link given in #2 also overlaps the forum select area. OK in IE.
some other bloke...

For those of us who have been on CN for a while (including me, who has only been on here just shy of 6 months) are so used to having it on the left... lets just say that everyone has always told me that change is good - I never, ever believed them, not once. ;-)

Hey,
I see what you mean. Thank you for letting me know. Of course, there is always going to be some formatting errors whenever lines extend long like that. I believe I have fixed it to be somewhat better though.
Thanks again,
Justin

I'm seeing the same behavior in Firefox 2.0.0.17, and noticed the same thing a couple weeks ago, in another thread. That would seem to indicate that it's not due to the change of position of the forum links, as it had also occurred prior to this change.
Please let us know if you found someone's advice to be helpful.

Hey Justin - I'm wondering what motivated you to change the forum layout. In doing so have you also extended the maximum characters for the topic? If not, why not?
Oh by the way I am kinda an old dog. I'm used to switch Forums by going to the left. Now I have no choice but to teach myself new trick by going to the right instead.

It do the same for me in FireFox 3.0.3. The forum is not browser friendly anymore, it not work in IE 6 either. I liked the old style best.
To many adverts as well makes it to slow to load.

I don't like it >:-(

Just when I had kinda sorta gotten used to the new layout, it changes again. :( Can we maybe keep the new two column thingy, but move the Forum options back over to the left side? Please? :)

Mee too
Like a left handed drinking fountain.
"Best Practices", Event viewer, host file, perfmon, antivirus, anti-spyware, Live CD's, backups, are in my top 10

Working fine in IE6SP1.
Now if we could just get the distractios out of the thread and off to the right under the Forums. ADS/Related Posts. :)
One thing I like is being able to easily avoid the KeyWord PopUP ADS. Don't have to cross the text unless you want to.
There is nothing to learn from someone who already agrees with you.

I have those keyword popups turned off.
The option to turn them off is available to all.
The only clickable links I see are those put there by responders.Goin' Fishin' (Some day)

mmm...
Can't for the life of me see why things is being moved around so much...
We seem to be going down the "it wasn't broke so someone fixed it" road - since Tom's Hardware effectively took over CN?
Can we not revert to the previous layout; at least restore forum lists etc, to the left?
And it is still very much slower to load CN via IE(6x) than via Firefox...

C'mon Justin,
Throw us a crumb. Where is computing.net heading?
I'm sure I'm not the only one who's...... wondering

The new layout seems to load faster for me in IE6 as well, but I find it a bit slower in IE7.

I think the change has less to do with enhancing the CN experience & more to do with advertising space. Look at the size of the old "Data Software Recovery" square compared to the ad square just above the twin columns. Looks like it's all about the money.

Personally, I don't mind clever changes implemented in order to enhance revenue stream, it usually works out as a win-win for all.
One thing I am concerned about though, revolves around the type of ads being delivered. I don't really see how the annoying hop of a deranged lilliputian is going to get anyone here fired up about eliminating their debt.
Justin ... can we, at least, have the ads delivered, limited to or somewhat restricted to PC/tech related materials?

Saber - I think what we are asking Justin to do is beyond his control. Don't forget BestofMedia Group is the new owner and they are running this site for money through advertisements.

Hi,
I understand all your concern about the changes. As far as I know, this change is the last major layout change that will occur on the site.
We decided to do the change for a couple of reasons. First, now every page (including the homepage and search page matches). Second, the new format looks more similar to the rest of Tom's sites. Third, there were some advertising considerations (I mean, that is how the site operates).
Like I said, I apologize for the inconvenience, but, as far as I know, this is pretty much the last major layout change. If anymore layout changes are suggested to me, I will resist them (which I do have a lot of power to do) and let people know your concerns.
Honestly, I use the site too. The change takes a tiny bit to get used to. However, after a couple of days, it seems like it'll be just as simple as before.
Justin

The site looks like carp on wide screen moniters. It all lopsided and not proffessional at all.
What good for Tom is not neccessarily good for Computing.Net.
It looks like every other cruddy forum website now.
The old website here was the best.
Where's the Computing. Net logo gone?, has Tommy told you take it down Justin, coz that is just the last straw if true

Better to see a format change here than another traffic light installed on the road to work.
Used to take 15 min and now it takes an hour.
CN takes the same amount of time....actually it is quicker than it was 6? 7? years ago.W.L.

Is Rolf still a moderatir her at CN now that Tom has taken over. Have they replaced him with one of thers?

The site looks good, loads faster and the specialty forums are easier to read. I never go to Tom's and I don't let the adverts get in my way.
I like it
There is no such thing as Health Food... just Health Fanatics!

My Firefox is OK again now. Ads can be blocked in IE & FF (inc mouseovers) so I've not seen them on here for years....
Left or right - I'm easy either way, but I guess I'm pretty well an outsider these days.
some other bloke...

My apologies Justin for inadvertantly opening this particular can of worms again. I was only pointing out a minor technical glitch affecting FF browsers and you have rectified that. Please feel free to remove this thread if you consider it of little archival value or interest.

Hey,
Richard59... No problem. Just an FYI though, due to some problems, I had to change the code back to how it was originally. Like I said, what you found isn't really a bug. There is really no good way to handle long lines like that. It turns out, the old way (the way you told me about first) is actually better.
Thanks,
Justin
