OS: Windows XP Professional
CPU/Ram: Pentium 4 3.0 GHz
Product: Dell Dimension B110

Hello,

I got a Dell Dimension B110 from a friend for free. It had an Intel Celeron 2.53 GHz Processor.

Now, I upgraded it to this processor:

Intel Pentium 4 Northwood Processor 3.0 GHz Hyper Threading Technology 512 KB Cache. I enabled Hyperthreading in BIOS.

It has: MMX SSE SSE2 but no SSE3?

My Celeron had SSE3!

Now, did I downgrade my computers processor or did I give it a better processor? I can't tell the difference with the performance, but should I reinstall Windows?

Try disabling Hyper Threading in the BIOS again & see if the system perks up.

Jam,

If I disable Hyper Threading, won't that make the computer slower? I mean the system is very fast now, I just feel that the Intel Graphics is slowing it down. Does SSE3 Matter?

No. If you're not running apps that can take advantage of HTT, you'll see no difference in performance, in fact, it may actually increase. Try disabling it & see what happens....you can always enable it again.

"The performance improvement seen is very application-dependent, however, and some programs actually slow down slightly when Hyper Threading Technology is turned on. This is due to the replay system of the Pentium 4 tying up valuable execution resources, thereby starving the other thread."

As for the graphics, Intel's Extreme 2 is one of the worst integrated graphics soultions out there. It uses system RAM rather than it's own dedicated video RAM & relies on the CPU to do much of the work. It is definitely NOT suitable for gaming. Unfortunately your system has no AGP slot so if you were to upgrade to a *real* video card, your only option is standard PCI. Any cheap PCI video card would be a HUGE improvement over the integrated.

BTW, check what speed your RAM is running at....

I am planning to use this computer strictly for music recording using my Delta 1010LT I recently bought for 200 bucks. The performance is much better than the crappy celeron.

^ I agree with you a lot, Jam. I thought since I will only be using this computer as a Music system, I don't need a graphics card, but since I have an NVidia GeForice FX 5200 PCI card in my Pentium 3, I might as well use that and put the NVidia GeForce 4 64 MB AGP lying around in my Pentium 3.

My worries however is the sound. The NVidia card has a fan and I don't know weather it will make the computer noisy.

Now, my question is a better fan for my CPU. Right now, whenever I run Windows Media Player or any games, the computer gets VERY NOISY and it defeats the purpose for what I want to do with this computer. Where can I find a replacement fan for this Computer? It has to be a B110 fan which can fit the motherboard power pin.

I looked everywhere and I can't find a quiet one.

So my 2 questions are will the NVidia card make noise in the system? Also where can I find a new fan for the Processor which doesn't make noise?
