jumper problem

Specs: Windows XP
when i boot up my gateway E4200 it keeps entering configuration mode after pressin esc and pressing yes to the prompt to discard all changes i get an error screen that says jumper must be returned to normal position for settings to take effect it is safe to turn the system off now i was running windows xp home with service pack 2 but now i cant even get to the welcome screen do you have any solutions on how to fix my computer by the way i have a quantom fireball 10 gb primary and a seagate 40 gb secondary with ram upgrades

Just taking a stab at this. If wrong I am sure some one will have a better opinion.

You start your computer.
It goes into setup.
You press esc
Then discard all changes.

Lets stop here:
If the computer goes into setup some thing is wrong.
If you discard any changes nothing is fixed.

Continue:
A message of a jumper being returned to it's normal position.
You have two hard drives.

Stop:
Were both hard drives installed and working before this problem or after?

Thinking:
You installed second hard drive and they are on the wrong ribbon connection or the jumpers are wrong.

Your computer sees the problem and is trying to fix it's configuration but you keep discarding the changes.

Perhaps I misread your post...

Did the problem start to occur after you installed your second drive? What you installed/changed prior to having these problems will help us pinpoint the issue.

i finally got it working somehow lastnight but then the mouse couldnt be plugged in or it would freeze i was using it with only the keyboard another thing windows took 10 minuts to display the welcome screen now it is doing it again when i got it working i had to take my computer completely apart and put everything together again and the hard drives were being used previously when my computer just shut down i rebooted and it said no windows operating system so i used kill disk and wiped my primary and i installed xp professional essintuals last night everytrhing was going ok untill 5:30 today
