My Sansisc cruzer has stopped working on my computer. When i plug it into a known working usb port and click on My computer and click on the K:jump drive it locks up and windows says the program is not responding. I can not do anything untill I unpluge the jump drive from the usb port.

I took it upstairs and tried it on my wifes new dell and it worked fine.
All my other uSB attachments work fine from any usb port on my machine.

I did a lot of searching but found nothing like this jump drive problem

Are you connecting it to a hub? I noticed a number of people with problems with that brand drive. Is it a big one, like 8GB?

No. it is conected to my front cpu usb port. I have also tried the back ports. I have 6 usb connections and all work with any port and also my usb hub. My Jump drive is 1 gig. I think is is unusal that it works fine on my wifes computer which is a dell also. And the data that is on the Jump drive was loadedc on my computer several days ago.

try going to device manager-univ. serial bus controllers and uninstall the root hub devices. Reboot and try again.

I've had that happen a couple of times (especially with cheaper flash-drives, though a little surprising you're having trouble with a SanDisk---one of the better ones). Sometimes the driver (be it Win98/2K/XP) seems to get corrupted and requires that you manually "root -it-out" and reinstall it to get it working again. Other times it just needs reformatting on a machine that can identify it. Sometimes (when it won't work on any machine) the drive just gets zapped or just doesn't work for whatever reason. At that point they turn into geeky bracelet charms....

per. you suggested [[uninstall the root hub devices]]. I am not sure I understand what will happen, Are you saying ,when I reboot, they will be reinstalled?. Its a little scary to me.

T-R-A the driver gets corrupted and requires that you manually "root -it-out" and reinstall it to get it working.

Thanks for the tip but I don't have a clue on how to do what you are suggesting.

What I mean is you need to search for an ".inf" file (and sometimes it's associated .PNF file) usually located inside C:\WINDOWS\INF folder. Usually something like "oem8.inf" (and oem8.PNF). There can be tons of them, and to know which one you've got, you need to send the .inf file to a text editor to decipher the info. This can take quite a while, since there can be so many. At that point you just remove them and reinstall/reinsert. This one used for Microsoft Virtual PC starts off something like:

;
------------
; File: VMNetSrM.INF
;
; Contains: Virtual PC Network Services INF file
;
; Copyright: (c) 2001-2003, Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.
--------------

[Version]
Signature = "$Windows NT$"
Class = Net

However, if you're not comfortable with such procedures, I'd recommend having an expert look into it...

Did a complete check of each usb hub and host and each device in device manager said they are working properly. Thats as it should be as every usb device I have works just fine in any of my 10 avilable usb ports. Printer, keyboard, mouse, creative sb sound controls, game steering wheel and game joystick. Just tried my jump drive again on my wifes new computer and it works fine.

Now when i plug it in to my computer it is not recognized at all. It lights up, and windows makes the recoginition sound"ta-da'
and then nothing. befor it was showing up as "k" drive and when i would highlite it My computer would lock up untill i removed the jump dive .Now there is nothing.

Thanks a lot for trying. I guess I just can not use jump drives.

BTW. in my windows inf file their are 185 entrys. of which 4 have some kind of usb designstion.

EDIT!!!! Just baught a new verbatim 2 gig on sale and it works fine.

The sandisc 1 gig still works in my wifes computer but not in mine.

Thanks again for your suggestions.

Just in case anyone refers to this in a search I have finally resolved the problem with SanDisc. per there suggestion, Using MSCONFIG I disabled all start up items by unchecking load start up items on the first page of the system congig utilities box. Evidently one of my start up programs was conflicting with the sandisc util;ity. Now i am attempting to find which program was the culprit.
