What happens if I did not recall seeing a unique number when I applied?
Also I was wondering if anyone gets this message why is it that semantec does not reconize that I have avast installed?

Hi babyblue,

The unique number is so you can track your post for follow-ups and go directly to it rather than having to search the site.

If you don't have your unique number you can also save the page that your post is on into your favorites and go directly to it from there.

How do mean symantec doesn't recognise Avast installation?

Why would Symantec recognize Avast? They are both virus scanners and you should not have two virus scanners running simultaneously. They tend to have the proverbial jurisdictional dispute.

Member id #?

Are you asking about the
Symantec Security Check?
http://security.symantec.com/sscv6/...
Antivirus Product Check
Checks whether you're protected by a commonly-used virus protection product.

I bet it will not find mine, nothing to worry about.

If you hav Avast installed... then you do not need Symantec a-v... Also I strongly recommend you stick with Avast (or AVG if you prefer that one). Symantec util is a resource hog to say the least... Avast is low resource, simple to use etc.. and (like AVG) it's "free" (for home use).

Also trying to install/run two a-vutils will produce conflicts, battles for control etc.; and neither will work (properly) in the end...

I like to do a leak-test to check my firewall is doing its job... It will tell you how your pc is communicating on the internet. Preferably after running a leak test you want it to show you that all your ports are stealthed.

You can do this here:

https://www.grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2

(Copy and paste this link into the address bar on your browser)

Click on the proceed button in the middle of the screen.. then click on "common ports" and run that scan, and if you want you can also run the "all service ports" scan.

To check Avast is running you can browse the internet and look to see if the little blue ball at the bottom of the screen is spinning. You can also run scans by double clicking the avast icon on your desktop.

Also the thing with the xp operating system is that when you disable your firewall or antivirus program it detects this and certainly lets you know that you aren't protected with a pop-up on the bottom right of your screen.

Are you getting alerts when avast updates itself? If you are you can be quite comfortable in knowing that your pc is protected.

Scanit's Browser Security Test automatically checks your browser for various security problems. When the test is finished you get a complete report explaining the discovered vulnerabilities, their impact and how to eliminate them.

Hi babyblue,
I use ZoneAlarm free version 7.0.337.000, the latest
version is 7.0.362.000
http://www.majorgeeks.com/ZoneAlarm...

Another firewall I like and have used before is
http://www.personalfirewall.comodo....

One or the other should get along with Avast.
Another free product from Comodo is
Comodo BOClean : Anti-Malware

Good luck and stay safe.
