Java/Windows Installer Service

Hey, guys! My system seems stubborn about opening any Java applets or javascript prompts whatsoever. I have folders in my c:\ drive for both j2re1.4.2_03 and j2re1.4.2_05. I'm not sure if there is a specific file I need to add to my Windows Firewall Exceptions. I have the box checked for Java in my IE/Tools/Internet Options/Advanced box.
I've tried to download Java 5.0 from Java.com, but I get a Windows Installer error every freakin' time. It says that the WI service cannot be accessed. I'm stymied by my stupid computer at this point.
No idea if it's related, but I've also had trouble with persistent hijacks from winsearchassistant and websearchupdate. Are they related? If not, how do I handle them?
