looked in my remove or install programs and it shows every Java update as a separate program. I removed 2 and 3 update but left 4 and 6 update. Why is each update showing as a separate program....any ideas

In order to prevent any dependency damage, it doesnt automatically uninstall previous version. The user must uninstall the previus version self. In other word: Sun Microsystem isnt responsible if one of your app doesnt work anymore after you uninstall the needed version. You should know exactly what you are doing. In most cases, it is safe to uninstall the previous version

Often, the Java updated versions are updated as a result of Sun discovering a vunerability with the older version so it is always a good idea to install the latest and then using Add or Remove Programs uninstall the earlier versions.
