I've got another problem with the XP. I can't see my moms computer (she runs
Windows 98 Se). I think I know why. In 95, 98, Me and even 2000, you had a drive in
network properties called NetBEUI. When I installed this, I could see my moms
computer. Now, in XP, Microsoft has removed NetBEUI (why, the heck I don't know). So
my mom can see my computer, but I can't see hers.
I've already tried to set up a home office network in XP, so I can share folders
and sutch. My mom can go into my harddrive and the folders. So far, so good. But,
here's the real strange thing:
I can see my moms computer, but can't get access to it. The message "\\Sofia is
not accesible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact
the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions." Good
damn, I know it's not my moms fault, it's something in XP. I can get access to the
Internet (my mom has the 56k modem), but not access to her folders and sutch.
So, help me, please. Is there anyway I can download drivers of NetBEUI for the
XP, on Internet? Or do I have to make some changes in my network properties? Any
answers would be great.
Ohh, and buy the way, I've got this network card:

Realtek RTL8029(AS)-based Ethernet Adapter (Generic)
10 Mbit speed
do not jusing ethernet cable, jusing another cable (is it not called T-cable maybe? I
don't know...).

Are there any real clever guy that has fixed this problem?

I'm confused. Can you or can't you see your mom's computer?

Anyways, here's what you need to do.

You can set up both machines to use TCP/IP instead of netbeui.

On the 98 machine right click on network neighborhood. On the configuration tab, press Add...Protocol...Microsoft...TCP/IP.
Now you have added a TCP/IP protocol for your network adapter. Now you should have one TCP/IP for your dialup and one for your network card. Highlight the one for the network card and press properties. Go to the IP address tab. Select specify an IP address.
In IP address put in this number: 192.168.0.1. Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0.
In the bindings tab make sure Client for Microsoft Windows and File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks are both checked. Under the Netbios tab, make sure that "I want to enable netbios over TCP/IP" is checked. Everything else should be ok.
It will tell you to reboot. Then it will automatically create an IP address of 192.168.0.1 for your local network.
Now all you have to do is the exact same thing for your WINXP machine. Except make the IP address 192.168.0.2.

Now create a share folder just like you used to do. Except on the XP share folder go to Tools...Folder Options...View...and uncheck use simple file sharing.

Now create the share on the win98 box and you should be able to see both machines.

If you get an error accessing the XP machine like \\computer is not accessible then you need to create a user account on the XP machine for the windows98 user that is attempting to connect to it.(Control Panel...User Accounts). If your mom logs onto the 98se as "Mom" with a pass of "Mom",
then create a user Mom, with a pass of Mom in the XP user accounts and all should go well.
Hope this helps.

Microsoft has discontinued support of Netbeui, but it's still included on the CD. However, you have to install the files manually, then go into netowrk properties and install it. The files are found in the folder X:/valueadd/msft/net/netbeui --where "X:" is the letter of your CD drive.

Do this:

Copy nbf.sys into the folder: Y:/windows/system32/drivers
Copy netnbf.inf into: Y:/windows/inf .

You'll need to view hidden folders (MSExplorer: Tools | Folder Options | View Tab) to see the ../INF folder.

Note: Substitute "Y:" for your XP harddrive or partition and "../windows" for your XP systemroot folder (i.e. if "../winnt" or whatever).

Then you can go into network properties and use "add protocol" to install Netbeui.

Glad it's workin' for ya dude. I got a small 4-PC workgroup sharing a DSL line. We use Netbeui for internal file & print sharing cuz it's non-routable over the internet. Therefore there's no risk of it leaking to the outside world.

This is 'THE' solution to this problem! I was running several PCs on my home network, and used to run NETBUI. When I started installing XP on some machines, some computers couldn't browse the drive shares on other computers. Following this kind person's explanation of manualy insalling NETBUI on Windows XP, this solved the problem.

Just one question... NETBEUI seems like a slow network protocal. Is there any way to do this without NETBEUI? It just does not work browsing shares between 98, ME, 2000 and XP systems... Anyone know how to make it work with TCP/IP? I was told putting shares on TCP/IP with full access is a very bad security measure.. That's why I chose Netbeui for my internal network.

I did exactly the same (copying the files etc.) but the Netbeui protocol does NOT appear in the protocol list! What's wrong??

Could it be a difference between the XP home and Professional edition? (I have the home edition)

Also trying to add the Netbeui protocol direct from CD (-install-, -have disk-) won't work!

Any idea's for me??

A correction on my last posting:
I discovered that Netbeui appears as a protocol for a LAN connection, but NOT for an Dial-in connection?!?

Again: Any help is very welcome!

I recently purchased an WinTel Box with XP. I was told that these 2 files (netnbf.inf & nbf.sys) do not ship with the OEM version, and I will need to buy another full install CD just to get these two files...

Anyone have access to these two files that could email the, or post them somewhere?

This is what the machine's mfg said:
___________
The version of windows XP that comes with your computer is an OEM version. Because of this these files are not included. In order to get these files you would need a copy of the XP install or upgrade cd. We do
not provide this.

All the restore CD's come with the OEM version of Windows due to a liscensing agreement with Microsoft. If you require a full version of Windows you will need to purchase this at your local retailer. We only support the original hardware and software that was installed in the factory.

I'm also running into the same trouble with a newly purchased HP laptop that has XP installed on it. I can't seem to get it to work with TCP/IP and I can't locate the necessary files to install NetBeui. I've read elsewhere that the files (netnbf.inf and nbf.sys) can be located on a Win2k disk as well. Unfortunately my current home network is on Win98. Has anyone out there found a solution yet or does anyone have a Win2k CD/system that they can copy the files off of for us? Heck, if I can get a hold of these files I'll post them somewhere for everyone and post the location here!
Thanks!

I'm still waiting for my ISP to activate my personal webspace... once that's done I'll post the URL here and you will be able to download those two files from there. Until then, just shoot me an email and I'll be happy to send them to you.

You could ping the server?! I didn't even have that much luck with my home network. That's even more frustrating.

Well you're obviously experienced at setting up networks so don't think that I'm trying to insult your intelligence by suggesting this, but I've read somewhere that permissions on XP are a bit screwy. From what I remember, the XP machine has to have accounts setup on it for each person logged into the network. Ok.. it's late, I've had a long day, so if someone can clarify/correct me on this please do.. but the way I understand it, if you connect to your LAN using the username "stmute", password "password" then you need to have an account on the XP machine with the same username/password combination. I haven't tested that theory however. It also seems strange though to have to create accounts on each XP machine for each person that is going to be on your network. If you have 20 people on your network and only 3 XP machines, you'd end up creating accounts 60 times that day! I'd love some clarification if I'm misunderstanding that.

Anyhow, I've read that information at a couple of sites so I figured it might be worth mentioning.

I have problems attaching an XP Pro machine on to a small network of Win95 and Wn98 machines. I am unable to ping or see the Win9X machines and they can't see the XP. I have used the XP setup wizards to no avail. I am confused by the "bridge" I also do not understand the issue of users and passwords sited in response 19. Can anyone enlighten me on this?

Help !!!!

I have been trying to network my new XP machine with another PC running Windows Millennium and a Laptop running Win 98.

I am ALMOST there after much frustration.

XP can see Me and 98 on the network
98 can see XP and Me on the network
But ... Me can only see 98 and will not see XP

I have spent a week trying to find a simple solution ... I am about to blow Me away and re-install 98 on that machine ... unless someone out there in cyberspace can tell me why Windows Millennium will not see Xp on the network?

Help please.
