I have Comcast broadband internet and I am having problems connecting to the internet since removing Norton Anti-virus. I am assuming that is not the problem.
When I check my IP address in the "Network Connection" in the control panel it says:
IP Address: Invalid IP Address
When I bring up the DOS prompt and try ipconfig it just lists nothing and zeroes.
When I try ipconfig /renew it says:
C:\Documents and Settings\dickhuard>ipconfig /renew
Windows IP Configuration
An error occurred while renewing interface Wireless Network Connection 3 : The s
system cannot find the file specified.I tried resetting my cable modem (D-link) and router (Cisco). I even just hooked the cable modem straight to the NIC in my PC. I called Comcast tech support and they tell me they can ping my cable modem, but they couldn't help me get up and running again. I have had no problem since implementing the router over 6 months ago. I don't know what else I can try, the only advice they could offer me was to call D-Link (the cable modem company).
What could be causing this and/or what can I do to try and fix it. I want to exhaust every other possibility before rolling XP back.

I have already contacted my ISP: "I called Comcast tech support and they tell me they can ping my cable modem, but they couldn't help me get up and running again."
They are the ones who had me try:
ipconfig /renew

So u have an 'invalid IP address' and are using a wireless network ??
Is the IP address for ur internet logon static or dynamically assigned ??
Sounds like u have a wrong setting somewhere, but more info needed here I think.

The IP is dynamically assigned.
I am using a Cisco wireless router/access point. The D-link cable modem is "wired". So there is an ethernet cable running from the cable modem to the wireless router/access point.
The computer has a Linksys wireless NIC that connects to the Cisco wireless router/access point

try entering a static address. Probably something like
192.168.1.100
255.255.255.0
192.168.1.1See if it makes a difference. Or you could try uninstalling the card completely and reinstalling hoping that the reinstall of the driver will fix the problem

Here’s one idea. This has always worked for me, and is a common problem. If you are unfamiliar with the registry, forget the following. Also it MAY solve your prob-lem, and it may not, but it’s worth a try. Pay close attention:
Back up your registry. Important.
Go to the command prompt and type ipconfig /release (space after fig), then type ipcon-fig /renew. IF you get a message that says something like cannot connect because you are trying to reach a socket that doesn't work (this is not the exact message, but socket is the key word), then do this: (If you don’t get such a message, or if the renew solves the problem, stop here.)
From a known good other computer, go into the registry (through regedit) and COPY the following two keys to a floppy: winsock and winsock2. DON'T delete them, just copy. They are found in HKLM, System, Current Control Set, Services. (You copy from the registry by highlighting the key and going to file, export, and export or copy them to the floppy.
THEN go to your machine and delete the same two keys in the registry.
THEN put the floppy to which you copied the earlier winsock keys in your drive A, click (or double click) on each of the two files -- winsock and winsock2 -- in turn. You will get a message saying something like 'do you want to add this to the registry'. Say yes or OK. Do both of them.
That's it. Try connecting. Try ipconfig /release and renew. If you still can't connect, then there are other issues, and I don't have enough info to help.

I would continue to try and get connected direct via the modem, bypassing the router, as this will make life easier !!
I suspect that the modem is at fault here (assuming u have set the NIC to 'Obtain an IP Address Automatically').
Check device manager for any yellow exclamation marks and try un-installing/re-installing the modem driver.
Other than that, try a diff modem if pos.

"Is the router connecting to the modem without any problems?"
I beleive so.
how do I ping the router and/or check it's settings?

"I would continue to try and get connected direct via the modem, bypassing the router, as this will make life easier"
I have tried this already and it was a no go...I am hoping it is not the cable modem although it appears to be the culprit at this point. Unfortunately I don't have a spare one. I may try to uninstall the cards and whatnot before going out and purchasing another cable modem.

You would need to know the ip address of the router to attempt to ping it. If you have the manual that came with your router, it will help you determine what that ip address is. I use a linksys router and I could get into it by going into Internet Explorer and entering 192.168.1.1 into the adress line. This brings up a login box which I would enter my name and password to see the router configurations. You should be able to log into the router and check if it is connected to the modem. Possibly a Status tab once you get in. Your manual should explain all this to you. If your nic isn't working though, you won't be able to do anything.
Cable modems display lights that indicate whether it can send or receive information. If these light are solid then, it has done it's post test and verified that it can do the tasks required to browse the internet.
I firmly believe that, by removing Norton, your pc has lost or corrupted the driver running your nic. I would try reinstalling your nic driver(remove the driver first in Device Manager by selecting the device and click Remove). You might want to even try switching the slot your card is seated in prior to reinstalling it. If this doesn't work, I would try another nic card before spending the money on the modem.

Turns out Windows was corrupted somehow. Entually, I had to reformat the hard and do a fresh install of Windows. Now I am back online with no problems.
