Itunes won't let me Update IPOD

My IPOD was working great. I had hundreds of songs on it. Then I plugged it into my computer the other day and it DELETED all of my songs. Okay, so I thought I would put them all back on. But it won't let me. The message I get is SONGS ON THE IPOD CANNOT BE UPDATED BECAUSE ALL OF THE PLAYLISTS NO LONGER EXIST. However, ALL OF THE SONGS are on ITUNES!!! I have reformatted my IPOD. I have reinstalled several times the software for both the IPOD and ITUNES. Nothing helps! Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks in advance if anyone can get me to get this thing working!
