when i start my computer, and i go to msconfig, there's items that r checked and won't stay unchecked. when i restart my computer so the changes can take effect, its still there. how can i remove them permanently? thanks
IT DOESN'T MATTER!!!

When you click to clear a check box for an item or a line, the Selective Startup option on the General tab is automatically selected.
After you make the selections that you want, click OK, and then restart the computer when you are prompted to initiate the changes.

If they are unwanted entries (and you uninstalled the program associated with it), you can use a registry cleaner to remove it. Or you may manually remove the entry in registry editor at your own risk as the entry may be needed for one of your programs on your computer.
Intel Pentium 4, 1.8 GHz
1.0 Gb of RAM,Win XP Pro SP2
Gigabyte mobo, 350 W PSU
Radeon 9600
Sound Blaster Live 5.1
HP CD R/RW
LG DVD burner

you may also want to check the program preferneces to make sure they are not set to start when windows starts...such as msn...if you clear the msconfig entry and have the preference set to start within the program, the program is a little more aggressive and than msconfig and will start when you reboot

Usually you can figure out what program is trying to start by using the abbreviations in msconfig. Some programs really make it difficult to figure out how to disable the start-up though. One program that immediately comes to mind is Real Player. You have to turn off automatic services under preferences and tools, or the sucker will pop right back in msconfig at the next start-up. The way to permanately remove items from your startup is to use the registry editor. Here is how you do it.
1. Go to Start, then Run. Type Regedit to open the registry editor.
2. Select HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, then SOFTWARE, Microsoft, Windows, CurrentVersion, Run. This is one of the keys where Windows stores your startup information.
3. I would right-click on the key and export it, just in case you delete something by mistake. Then you can just import the registry data and it will restore the values.
4. Now, on the right side of the registry editor you will see the items that startup with your computer. Find the values you want to get rid of and delete them.
5. Once you are done with this key you should check the other startup key, which is the same as above but in the HKEY_CURRENT_USER section. Here is the key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
A word of caution, be careful what you delete since there are some programs that need some of these items to work properly. If you are unsure about what something does, try typing it into Google. There are many sites that identify what a startup item does and whether or not it is necessary.Buff Nasty
