The "Its now safe to turn of your computer is part of Windows 98".

It doesn't come with Windows XP as Windows XP will normally be running on a modern machine with an ATX power supply which shuts itself off.

Even with Windows 98 you will not see that message if it is running on a machine with an ATX power supply.

Hi

That warning is not part of XP, xp will not shut the comp down untill all apps have been stoped and writen back to the hard drive.

Only than will xp shut doewn the comp for you.

Have no fear this is not win 98 or me where the comp would shut down before windows finished its task.

Regards

It actually does come with Windows XP, although it's rarely seen. I had it install on a system with an AT power supply for a shor time, so I saw the message multiple times.

Dan nailed it on the head for me. I formatted and installed windows 98 on a friends 'puter then installed a windows xp pro upgrade all the while the 'puter bios was set to apm disabled (must have been a default). Device manager showed it as a standard pc. - thanks Dan

fateswarning (and those that replied) you may want to check out this Microsoft Knowledge Base Article - 810903. It explains that this CAN happen in xp and a simple fix in the control panel takes care of it.

It is so part of XP. Maybe ppl should check there facts. It occured to me when I upgraded from 98 to XP instead of doing a fresh install. Stupid Stupid. Anyway it has something to do with ACPI being disabled.
