ISP Dial-Up Icon-Identifier Gone ??

I'm still in the tech stone age...I use a dial-up ISP.
My question concerns the ISP Dial-Up Icon that appears in the lower right-hand corner tray after a connection has been made.
Windows XP provides an identifier showing the connection speed for several seconds once the connection has been made. Then the identifier slowly fades away.
Although not a big issue for me (since simply placing the cursor over the icon will still give me the connection speed), but my system no longer give me that connection speed "identifier".
Is there anyone familiar with such a problem, and how I can restore this function/feature?

okay, perhaps there is a virus or something causing this... try a virus scan and then re-set up the dial-up connection. now, it has been a while since I've used dial-up... so I'd talk to someone who's good with computers if this doesn't work.
I'm here to help as best I can...
