Considering how many problems people have with running their hardware and software, I am wondering if it is really worth it? I would like to hear comments from other people avout their XPs on Windows XP! Has it really suprised them as Bill Gate tells us it will after paying your hard earned cash to him. Is it really robust or faster?

Please feel free to add.

I think it is. I upgraded from ME (which is horrible for stability IMHO), and I find it to be very stable, and there are alot of nice upgrades in it. I think it was well worth the 100 bucks for the upgrade.

One thing is though, is make sure your hardware is compatable. My scanner and my Sandisk USB smartmedia reader won't work anymore, same with my dxr2 card( havent checked for a new driver for them in a few days though, I'm hoping they will come out with them).. I don't really care about the dxr2 card.. I just want to be able to rip dvd's to my hd again..

so if your hardware is compatable.. then XP is great, best OS I have bought ever...

Yes, it is worth it. However, wait a few months THEN get it. Let others (like myself who never learns) be the guinea pigs. Mr Gates likes to let 'eager beavers' slop around the mud and do the work for him in tuning the OS. He has lots of willing stooges standing in line everytime he has another 'break through'.

You also have to realize that most the people with XP problems had the beat versions.

Of course they are going to have problems, that's why it's beta.

I have to admit that it's worth it although I never thought I was going to say this. I had ME before, and it crashed every half an hour (I don't know why). I had a Pacbell DSL connection to the internet, and my connection speed fluctuated so much. My screen froze very often, and ctrl+alt+del wouldn't do any good. It just stuck. Now with XP, all that problems were gone. I noticed my connection speed is faster and more consistant. It hasn't crashed once or frozen although it's only been 3-4 days. I noticed a big improvement over ME. Plus I really like this new interface...very nice!

there are a few things to consider..

1. most of the hardware problems will be fixed by updated drives.( i know iknow..not all will, but its just like trying to use the same hardware on a mac or sun there will be bugs.. the os is completely new)

2. this time they did it right. 95 -> ME versions of windows were all patch jobs layed on top of eachother. xp seems to be the only real completely redesigned windows and seems to run without a hitch.

3. there are software compatibility issues. to me this seems like both a necessity and a marketing scandle. norton software, for example, before version 2001 will not work, so of course you must upgrade and pay the man. however since the os is on a different kernell, problems will arise with alot of software. (the compatibility mode is a good idea, but some software checks the os before installing and tells you that it is not compatible.)

4. the new system is very stable. i had 95 and ME and always had unidentifiable hangs and errors and crashes and..you get the picture. now i can leave my computer up indefinitely without rebooting.

5. i have never been an advocate of microsoft, but im going to back the new os because maybe its time people had something that actually works.

Am I the only oddball that liked ME and never had any problems? Oh well, I too jumped on the XP bandwagon and am glad I did.

I have used 95, 98, 98SE, 2000, ME, and Linux - love XP.

NO..Don't get it..Its a waste of money, use Win2k its more reliable than xp and xp developes a shut down problem when it gets slower n slower until it won't shut down at all.
Also if your using a dial up modem and your communication files die your screwed, tcp/ip is a considered a core component and you can't reinstall the files should they corrupt.
And last but not least.. It has no dos functionality at all, if something ever goes wrong (which it will) you have to reinstall.
What do I have to back up my claims.. Experience.
I had linux/win98/win2k tripple boot system going and then changed the win2k to winxp and it was a horrid move. Tho I must admit it does have good eye candy. and compared to win98 and that family it is much more reliable.
So I guess if your using a non nt based version than its worth it. But your going to lose alot of your freedom that you've currently got. If you've already got win2k stick with it.

My two cents, It simply rocks. Yes, problem will arise and so will problems arise if you install Linux and try get things working. If you have older hardware check to see if drivers have been written and there is a software compat. mode that will allow ya to run older programs. I'm not saying things are going to be 100% peachy, they have not been for me and I consider myself a Power user/Master tweaker/Master Registry Hacker and I have over 10yrs of in your face computer experince and I will not praise something I don't like. I hated Win 3.x so I didn't run it but Xp, oh man. This OS is so sweet, stable and tweakable I'm in love with this product.

I have had several operating systems on my LegendNote Notebook, all have had some sort of problem.

Notebook now running XP, it is faster and more stable, with all peripherals working properly - video display is now 2-3 times faster.

Only hassel was with Nortons Antivirus 2001, but with the patch, works fine now.

Agree, agree, agree...I love it, although I really had few problems with ME. However, with a large family, the fast user switching alone is worth it. And as far as W2K goes, it's great if you don't want access to all your equipment. Too few peripherals supported completely (scanner, video card, sound card, etc) I want it all, and XP is as close as it's come. A few small glitches, but most just due to vendors not yet releasing updated drivers. I'd say at LEAST 95% of my software is running fine without having to resort to compatability mode. Only thing I lost that I really, really miss is my webcam (D-Link DSB-C300. Ah well......

I had no problems with ME. Never crashes. Great for me, the average user. Gamers, etc. will want xp. Otherwise 99% of the world will do just fine with ME.

Well I dunno about all that activation stuff I do not like the idea of Bill and his breeds poking around inside my PC taking snapshots of my hardware etc...
My USB modem was not compatible but because nothing is supported by M/Soft at the moment, I however did force it and it works fine It looks good but yet again there is so much crap that you would not ever use I reckon it is definately a breakthrough although it should be free to everyone!! to make their own mind up before Bill Takes the world by storm!!

XP is the SECOND BIGGEST RIP OFF..
First WIN ME, and now WINXP..
I've used WINXP for 3-4 months First Beta.
Then original...........
First thing I noticed was WINXP is FASTER.. NOT, Bill Fake only OVERCLOCKS the graphic card, nothing more nothing less. SO of course some games go faster.
But the biggest and most anoying CRAP is,
I have a TYAN motherboard and a Geforce2, Soundblaster Live (not Value). Some games run very fast and smooth. Some games RUN "UNDER WATER EFFECT" so all GFX are fricken really slow. My friend has WINXP for him it works perfect. Then I looked on the Internet after someone who knows how to fix this problem. Answer : WINXP is not compatible with TYAN.... HOLY BULL. This is why I'm using WIN2000 AGAIN.. ALL GAMES WORK PERFECT. Some comps work and Bill Gates wants your money SO, Is it worth the new WINXP ? HELL NO... Not if I have to play games "UNDER WATER".. Bill Gates should shove his head under water...

I'll have to say it took me two days to get it going, but now that's it on, I love it. This is a brand new computer which is fast anyway. I ran Me on my other computer without too many problems, but XP is definitely a better program once you get it working. Make sure to run the compatibility programs and the upgrade adviser first and uninstall any programs it tells you to. It also helps you remember which programs you need to put on our get an upgrade for.

I must say thank you to all those people who have contributed to this forum.

I have been using the windows XP for the last couple of weeks now. It has been running great. It has not crashed a single time. Mind you Windows ME did not crash on me at all either.

One thing I like about this new OS is that it is more configureable to suit your taste. The internet seems to run slightly faster, I have noticed a slight increase in speed for the downloads. The games run fine. It is sexier than the previous Windows. It would have nice to have more desktop themes even Windows XP Plus comes with only 4 extra themes. Windows XP seem to make the monitor a lot brighter than before and I had to turn down the contrast and brightness levels lower.

The trick with the new OS is make some of your applications and hardware to run. If you can go through the pain of finding fixes for those applications and hardware issues then Windows XP can be rewarding.

It is costly though and Windows Activation really sucks! I do no think it will stop piracy but will make a lillte bit harder for people to crack. This what makes the hackers a little more determined! I have noticed a lot of cracks already on the web to overcome this problem.

I look forward to hear more comments from other users and thier XPs.

Okay, maybe I rode WinXP too hard.

I do like the faster graphics and the faster startup. The interface is really nice, but you can get a program that will duplicate all of the nice makeup.

It has better compatibility and the stability is incredible.

I'll tell you this much, its 2,000,000,000% better than WinME (ME gave me so many problems I decided to give it up. It would freeze at startup and during operation).

If you really like NEW, get Windows XP. Just be careful, because the CD key could have been used already. Everyone's craving for a CD Key (the WPA feature)

I wouldn't mind payin 100 bucks for it.

ENJOY.
