Is this stuttering?

Sometimes when I'm running a program my computer will stutter for sometime between 1 and 10 seconds, completely freezing whatever I'm doing. It's extremely annoying when I'm playing a game. What's the problem and how can I fix it?

You state you have 1024 MB of RAM. How much RAM exactly DO you have? What about your processor speed? Are you running many other applications when your machine freezes? What type of video card do you have installed?

1024 MB, 3.40 GHz, Nvidia GeForce 7800 GTX and the only other applications I have running are AIM and Xfire. And I've tested it without running them and it still freezes.

When you lower the game's setting does it happen as well ?
In the mean time, go to your motherboard's manufacturer and download the latest chipset driver for your motherboard and try an optimized driver for your card.
