My PC was recently infected by the W32 Protoride.worm. It was associated with the MsUpdate.exe. My Question is this. Is this a real program that is part of the Microsoft Windows Update or is it the worm? It was deleted and then I thought that perhaps it was a real file that was needed to provide me with automatic updates but am not sure. If it is a real file, how do I get a new copy of it to install. I have my Windows XP disk but don't know where to look for it. The path that it was located in was,
C:\Documents & Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\MsUpdate.exe\MSUPDATE.exe

Thanks for your help.

Looks like the W32.Protoride worm.

Hi, thanks for your responses. I had already gone to this site for removal instructions but it really didn't say that it was the worm but that it "tries to copy itself" to this path which made me think it was a valid program. MsUpdate.exe was mentioned twice in the above path which made me think the second one was the worm. The second format was all in capital letters.
Can anyone else out there who has the automatic Windows Updates enabled tell me if this is on their machine or not?

I don't know what it's but I had it on my laptop out of the blue....

Msupdate was running in the background and in the start-up folder. After deleting it I couldn't start programs like norton systemworks, AV and Paintshop and so on.
It was looking for "start.exe" Only WORD did work normal. Also I couldn't restart or shut down the pc.

I restored the registry with an old one and now I have no problems anymore.

Good luck!
