There is a loaded question. Define worth it? I say yes, others will say no. I've heard this argument for way to long now. Was Windows 3.1 worth it? Was 95 worth it? When will it ever stop? Most likely never. If you ask 100 people if it is worth it you are going to get 100 different responces. The only person who can answer your question is yourself. Is it worth it for me to spend 30K on a car? I can find plenty of people that would say yes and plenty that would say no. Oh well, I'll shup up now and watch the other silly responces evolve out of this never ending question that will never be answered.
Happy Holidays,
KTTD

i have xp on several computers. they all run fine, all hardware loaded with their drivers, the 'shell' is fantastic, the speed is outta this world, i find it hard to even look and 98 or millenium, both excellect os'es. the dual boot that xp sets up on partition harddrives is really neato. i can access the destop and files on the other partition if need be.
I LOVE IT!!!!!!

I'd say don't go for XP if you want it as an upgrade for the PC you already have. I have heard of tons of people who had horrible experiences in trying to upgrade and get it work with thier hardware. If you are planning to get a new PC, I'd say go for it.

By the way, they say XP is the most secure OS ever? Yeah, right. If you are going to use it, I'd disable the UPNP "feature".

I agree with PC Freak. And about what "kj" said on reply 3, "the shell is fantastic...I find it hard to even look at 98 or ME..." If you really want the XP look, get WindowsBlinds. It works great for me.

Seems like a lot of tension in response 1.
I look at it this way, it never hurts to ask other peoples oppinion about a product, I've done it as well as anyone else who will post a reply to this answer here, including you Kevin. The problem is though as you pointed out kevin that it all comes down to individual preferences. I for myself have little problems with XP Pro, but I had virtually no problems with ME either. XP is exciting and challenging in many ways cause it's new and it will keep you working on it to ultimately dicover it's full potential. Is there bugs in XP. Hell yeah, there are bugs, as well as in any OS wether it be Linux, Windows or any other OS. Is it worth it? Mmhh, depends on your budget and your need for a new OS, it's a bit over priced, I think. To make my point, you would have to find out about XP for yourself, best way would be to see if a friend has XP and work and play with it for a few days and then form your own oppinion about it.
Merry X-mas to you all.

M@anny you are correct in your responce. Any OS is not perfect, as long as mankind writes code there will be flaws. The whole UPnP bug I think is a bit blown out of the water. Yes, patch it if you need to but don't worry to much. I never had the damn thing installed. You can un-install it. The problem with software is once you purchase it, you are normaly stuck with it. Most stores don't allow you to return opened software so even if you go the home upgrade route you might be making a 100 dollar mistake. As one can tell the good and bad are already being talked about but nobody makes any valid points to why it is good nor why it is bad. The problem to asking this type of question is those that have had problems are going to slam the OS. It is hard to get a true objective opinion of the OS. If someone has a bad experince with software of any type they are not going to tell you it's the best thing since sliced bread. I think Xp rocks for the simple fact I have not had problems, now my thoughts on Win 3.x where, this OS sucks. I should remember who said this but I don't.
Xp is what you make it.
Laters,
KTTD

Is it worth it is truly a loaded question. None of us can answer that for you. What do you use your pc for?<-- this is the question that you should ask yourself. If your PC is running fine and does what you need it to save your money. Wait till your ready to purchase a new PC. One thats built for XP and you wont suffer the endless driver searches some have gone thru. On the otherhand if you like trying new things, having the "latest greatest", and dont mind spending a little time troubleshooting get XP right now. If i had to make a choice right now today of one vs the other with this system id choose windows me. On the otherhand i get a new mobo/cpu/ram you can bet XP will be my OS of choice. Again its all a judgement call. If searching for drivers or the loss of a favorite app or not being able to use a piece of hardware youve had since the 80's will drive you nuts then xp aint the way to go.

There is a danger on coming to a place like this and ask if XP is worth it. REMEMBER, this is a trouble-shooting site. Everyone coming here is having problems. I have used this analogy before, but I think it's true. Trying to judge XP by the responses here at a site for people with problems with XP; would be like judging an Audi while hanging out at an Audi Repair Shop. Remember, for the vast majority -- XP works great!

Works fine for me, although some ye olde network drivers were not available. Look out for Lindows if you just want a cheap OS that supports basic Windows apps. Apart from that XP is solid and stable, it has never crashed without me on purposly trying to make it crash. Good overall system. However search this fourm for the hardware your going to be using, make sure your ready for any problems.
OR
Theres always Linux + Wine.

It's kind of funny,When I first started looking at the Win ME board and thought...
"Wow, I can't believe all these people have this much trouble w/Win ME".
It did(and still does) run like a million bucks, for me anyway.Never a BSOD or lockup, never an issue and 1 original install.
Now I look at the XP board and see the FAR greater ratio of questions(with MANY remaining unanswered) compared to ME and say the same thing. The only difference is this time I am one of them!!
At LEAST 5 clean installs on a new HD.Frequent BSOD's(2 or 3 a week),and overall an odd acting, flakey O/S. It can't seem to multitask worth a dang and apparently just gets "confused" at times.
I like the interface although it IS a bit Romper Room/Playschool-ish.
I also like many of the features and the idea of the NT premise of stability.
Good idea and layout overall but again I have to stick with my statement of-
"Not ready for prime time".
It simply was not ready for release to the general public and has far to many hardware and software issues that need addressing.
True for all? Certainly not and many have as little trouble with it as I did w/ME.
True for many? Surely, far too many in my opinion to be coincidence.
For the record I am NOT an MS basher. I love Windows and I love learning new things and O/S's.
I equate my opinion of XP to auto Mfg.Chevy put out both the Corvette AND the Geo Metro. We all make mistakes :)

I have installed XP on 7 PC's. I love it. Although one of the PC's was an Athlon that I had some trouble with. Via chipset issues. Those issues "may" have been resolved now but I am still reluctant to install it on those machines.
.............BGB

I did it and so far so good, I lost all my desktop stuff and had to do some tweaking but all appears ok except for the problems I expected, like scanner and adaptec cd creator stuff. I guess I just wanted to be told to go ahead try it.

It certainly was worth it for me...I bought a new home computer back in April, and it came with Windows ME. Windows ME was a real load on this machine...I went from a 200MHz. Pentium-based machine to a 1GHz. Pentium !!! based machine, and it ran worse than Windows 95 did on my 200MHz. machine. Lots of slow downs, lock ups, lack of the ability to decently run multiple applications at the same time, and so on.
As a result, I've upgraded to Windows XP, and now I really do see the performance difference between the 200MHz. and the 1GHz. computers. And it gracefully runs several applications. I'm quite happy with Windows XP, very happy that I'm no longer wrestling with Windows ME. That was really painful. I've had a few transition problems, but they've been pretty easily worked through.
I still have two problems, but they're problems with HP and Juno, in that HP has not provided a driver that includes the printer toolbox. I can use the printer fully with the built-in Windows XP printer driver, but don't have the use of the printer toolbox anymore. And Juno doesn't play cleanly with Windows XP, but I've switched over to Outlook Express for email which works just fine (and is well integrated with Norton AntiVirus *smile*)
Also, I've been impressed with the native CD-ROM R/W tools for backup. I had to use Easy Creator with Windows ME, and now I can treat my CD-ROM R/W drive pretty much like any other drive on my machine.
So count me in the happy group, but I think that people with older computers might have more problems in getting drivers, as well as with the assumptions that Windows XP will make about the hardware underneath it. I have to be pretty strongly motivated to take the upgrade risks, and never did upgrade Windows 95 that came on my old computer to Windows 98 as I thought that I might. But I'm very happy that I upgraded to Windows XP.

First off, if you're upgrading from Win 98se, I will say to you to expect nothing but problems and then when you think you have it all figured out -----more problems! If you have a scanner more than 2 years old, sorry about your luck! and the other big thing is if you have a CD burner, sorry about your luck there too! Those are just a few of course, I could go on forever
