The Q*****.log (earlier version) and KB*****.log (current version) are Windows update installation files. The installation creates a default log file that records the successes and failures every time an update is installed. They are used to troubleshoot problems that arise as a result of the update.

The question is why do you want to delete them? You shouldn't be doing housecleaning in any of the
%systemroot% folders.

Hi XpUser,

Thanks for the quick response, you are right, I was going to do a little house cleaning.

As you say, "You shouldn't be doing house cleaning in any of the %systemroot% folders.

I'm running good and will leave the files alone !!!!!

Good call :-) That's what I always do - leave alone the %systemroot% folders and concentrate only on my own folders & files.

If you are running short on disk space, add a second hard drive. It's not very difficult.

Taking advice from a article I read on cleaning out unnessary files from your H.D. to gain more space thats been eaten up by files that are not needed I deleted all of my .log files ,now this was on a differant O/S,Windows Me ! However I found that by deleting install.log files I could not uninstall the application the .log file referanced the install info about ! Anyone who knows that these files are not needed for uninstalling an application or driver, please tell me how to get around the error notice install.log cannot be located when trying to update a device driver and uninstall the previous driver first apprently the install.log is not available .I had an ATI graphics card and ATI insist that you uninstall any previous driver B/4 intalling the newer updated driver ,to this day I stil have that PC with originial driver running ! Iam now on my new PC a 2.8 G.B dual core with WindowsXP MCE 2005 running ,and not sure if same rules apply ?
Thanks Nick

Nick Ritchie,

I don't see how your question is relevant here. If you want to get help, you need to start your own thread. In the future, please don't hijack someone else thread.

Was this thread not about deleting .log files ,did my reply not talk about my exprience with deleting some .log files install.log that caused me a problem when I went to uninstall the related app. I certainly cannot understand how by any strech of the imagination this could be considered "highjacking " someones thread? Lighten up my friend, none said you had to read my reply if you did not find it interesting !
Take Care Nick
