Ive just moved up to XP, im a mac user so dont hold much faith in Windows nonsense. But im quite impressed. Apart from the fact that i picked up a virus within 6 hours of installing the OS. i decided to re-install to clean out the virus. i was expecting to have to re-install all the software as i had done on 98. but wait, no, the OS is installed and all the apps that were on the hard drive also are still there and still work.No Re-Installing??? hhm!! but the strange thing is this. Before all this happened win media player would not play any .avi files, in fact it attempted to download codecs but returned an error message, so i downloaded DivX , i was able to play .avi files, yay!! but i hate DivX so uninstalled the player. but imagine my surprise.... win media player would now play the files. the wierd thing is after the re-install winmedia will still play .avi files. HOW IS THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I chose to delete the windows directory during install, so this should have been a fresh system, no virus exists and no more popups..... im bemused

WMP does do weird things sometimes. It will play some AVI files and others it will not. I have to use divX but I don't mind divX myself so it is no biggie.

If you place an XP box on the internet that is not behind a firewall has no anti-virus running and none of the windows updates it will last about 15mins before you will get hit by a worm. I do not think you can blame XP for the virus myself.

Anyways, yes WMP does at times do weird things but nothing is perfect.

Though I walk through the valley of Microsoft, I shall fear no OS for skills are with me

When you downloaded DIVX it might have installed some codecs that helped WMP out.
