Comment:

I have been experiencing this blue screen that says the same: IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL. My cpu seems to be running at top performance. but occassionally i might get it. RESTART. it does scandisk then boots back up. i actually didnt get this error until i installed blackice(firewall) I am not sure if this is the problem or not. I am still trying to pinpoint something that could be wrong. until then i guess im going to see how it runs without blackice running. let me know if anyone has anything else..
thanks

I too got the exact same thing. Everything was great until I installed the "WinXP compatible' new version of Black Ice and bam, system is unusuable with that blue screen constantly, removed blackice, no problems, put it back on, problems. I also experienced this with another computer on XP so I dont know, I blame blackice.

I havent tried uninstalling black ice just turning it off. I am going to uninstall and see if that does it.. thanks for the follow ups.

another thing. IIS has been corrupted or something cause it is freezing up and will not load correctly. I have uninstalled and reinstalled but still erroring out. blackice 2.9cai is now off. everything except IIS seems to be working. I'm not very happy but I'll try it out and if i cant get IIS to work guess i have to reinstall XP from scratch again!!. I've experienced this problem before. I am thinking that blackice is affecting IIS or something within XP and its network and causing it to majorly crash to the blue screen. thats it for now.

I had the same error, and found out that it is usually one of 3 things. Nic, cpu or ram. I had previously been wondering if one of my ram chips were flakey, so I removed it, and viola! problem solved, have not got the message again.

I get the same thing and I suspect it's when my computer is writing alot of data. How do I know? Well it only happens when I use irc to download. Once I have three simultaenous sessions open (i.e 3 files being downloaded) I will get the error. Can someone PLEASE help? I never had this problem until I installed EZCD Creator. And yes, that is off my system now.

I do have the same problem. I don't have BlackIce, but I have a lot less blue screens since I moved my NIC to another slot (75% less problems). It still happens when copying or moving large files. I also tried a BIOS update but it didn't help. I don't think it is caused by an application because the problems started directly after the clean installation, so without any application installed.

Well everything is good here.. I have not had any problems since I reinstalled XP and did not put black ice back on. But when I had black ice it only happened when yes it was writing a lot of data or I had a lot of programs running. I am not ruling anything out yet but my computer is pretty new and I am doubting its the ram (for me anyway). Everything I have is up to date with my specs listed above. I am not ruling anything out I am going to stay with it and see what happens. I'll let you know how it goes. So I guess It may be a program you may be running on XP for you all still getting the error.

From looking at the posts and comparing it to my own system i have come to think that it is a combination of hardware and software creating the problem.
My system
WinXP Pro
t-bird 1.33
1gig of mushkin pc133
3 hard drives 2 cd roms
3c509c-tx
sblive value
blackice defender 2.9.cai
norton antivirus 2002

I am willing to get together with other people who are having the same Irql_Not_Less_or_Equal erros to see if there is anything else in common, If you would, please contact me at my e-mail so we can find a solution... as of now i am going to try a fresh install, staying away from black ice and norton to see if that soves my problems. i am having the same characteristics as everyone else on these posts

Thank you

I got the IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL error this morning on a HP NetServer LC3 running WINNT 4.0 SP6a. It was caused by an electrical storm which disrupted all 3 of my Intel eepro 10/100 ethernet cards. Rebooted as many times as I wanted, didn't fix it until I powered down for 10 minutes, took the cards out and in and then it all came back fine.

I didn't believe that was what caused it, but the same network card in 3 different machines running 3 difference OSs showed a similar fault (although SCO and Linux don't do their version of BSOD [core dump] on such faults) .. happened to the same network card at 10 other locations near me that I know of at the same time also!

The NT machine was running BlackICE, but I don't think that had anything to do with this error.

Well i'm getting errors again but as A Ryan said about the nework cards that seems to happen to my ram i know im not running on very reliable power soure. there is a big machine that dehumidifies the air which cuts in and out and this sudden change on the same power line could cause the same error as A Ryan's but i seem to only pull out my ram then replace it then everything runs fine.
untile i power down and restart the computer after 12 hrs its really bugging me as i havnt a clue whats causing it.

It's a funny thing you mentioned the Intel NICs, because I use a Intel Pro 10/100 for my cable modem...Problem is, is that my laptop, a Solo 2150 Gateway, does the same type of stuff, without any PC cards installed...Obviously, it's a bit difficult to tell if it's a hardware issue here, and Gateway BIOS options aren't really helpful. You know, though, I started having these problems when I installed Age of Empires II. Almost immediately after, I got the screen. But that really shouldn't have anything to do with an IRQ issue, should it?

Good News. If you've been following from the top since I first put this message board down. Well Like I was saying BlackIce 2.9.cai was crashing my computer but for those who keep up to date a new version has came out 2.9.can and it is trouble free for Windows XP. For those who havent been reading from the top. BlackIce 2.9.cai has created great havick on my computer with Windows XP.. It was diffinitly the problem. no doubt about it. So if you are having the same problem I recommend you update your BlackIce to the new version or you may have to find away around the problem if that doesnt work. I know that old BlackIce.cai was terrible and did some very bad crap to the OS. So Goodluck and get BlackIce.can version from www.networkice.com. Thanks

by the way. If you had .cai installed you may have to find a way to completly uninstall it or get rid of the files before upgrading to .can or installing .can. If files are left on your system from .cai version you may still be in the same boat.

Gettin these Bluescreens too... :-(

I just got rid of my IRQ-Conflicts we'll see, if I still get these Bluescreens (IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL), then I guess, it's Black Ice.

BTW, got NAV 2002 and a Soundblaster Live as well ;-)

Yes, let us know if it worked for you.
As i said i installed Black Ice Version 2.9can (Full Version, no Upgrade) on a new system.
And i had these bluescreens! But my soundblaster and my GeForce2MX were sharing an irq in windows as well.
Might that have been the problem...?
Got rid of this irq-sharing yesterday and no crash since then.

But i didn't have much time to test, anyway!

We'll see, how XP is behaving, and I'll definitely let you know later...

Everyone bookmark this thread and tell us your experiences with this odd bluescreen!

And tell us about the hardware/software you are using and your irq-sharing.

Thanx a lot...

I run my system in dual-boot mode, win2k and xp pro. Several times in xp and once in 2000 pro.
Running Black Ice 2.9cai as well, but did start getting errors until I installed xp. As stated above, it happens while connected to the net via dial-up modem, transfering a large file to a zip scsi drive, and also downloading some information off the net.
Thought at first it was caused by overclocking mobo to 133, while memory is rated at 100. Tuned mobo back down and still got the error. Taking off BlackICE to see if it helps.

first of all. My system:
Asus A7v266 Mobo
AMD Athlon TB 1.4ghz
512mb DDR PC2100

I tried many methods. First of all, Since it STATES it's an IRQ problem. I started placing and removing my PCI cards. After trying every single combination with my Firewire, NIC, SB Live card. I realized it's not that case. Then i rebuild the computer and I still got no luck. I then Removed One of the DIMMS, and VOLA!!! It worked!!!
Now my next step is to see if i can somehow fix that stick of 256 DDR.

Hope this helps
PS: New computer dun mean you have good ram

(NOTE: in my point of view, XP stands for Xtra Problems)

Same problem here! I have WinXP Pro, BlackIce 2.9can, and NAV 2002. I get the posted error and sometimes this one: PFN_LIST_CORRUPT.
I have had some weird problems with BlackIce. Sometimes when XP boots, BlackIce has a red slash through it, but it is running! Then I right-click and select "stop black ice engine"; then the red slash goes away and the service shows as "stopped". Yeah, It's in reverse order. But this only happens after a BSOD.
Well, what I'm getting at is I added two more lines to my blackice.ini file and NOT had any BSOD's in 2 days! That might have fixed it!
Here is what I added using notepad:
adapterICE_ADAPTER = true
restart.whenDeviceChg = false

Try this before you uninstall BlackIce 2.9can.
Good Luck!

Hi everybody,

I just read everything on this page, but also I have got the problem with that error.
I am using, VIA chipset MSI KT7 turbo limited edition, AMD CPU, Realtek network card, RIVA TNT2 Pro, 256 MB memory, disk Baracuda 4, 40 GB. I did not a problem till BlackICE installation, but I found that before I should upgrade all fresh drivers for VIA chipsets and Realtek, but not last version of NVIDIA drivers, I use one before, upgrade BIOS, remove all settings in BIOS such as shadowing, chaching, turn around, PCI to CPU chache, switch of the USB ports in XP.
Also I had the same problems as all of you, described above, I sow that after all the changes in my XP all working fine. It is some national version (Polish), if you use any not English version and you have similar problem pls. Send me a mail.
When I install the BlackIce for XP (upgraded) the error occurred again but only once for 3 days. I will remove the BlackIce and I see what happened next. I do not know if my hardware is not correct or some things are wrong with regional version of XP. I am going to be mad, if I do not find the reason of that problem, could you help me or give any solution what should I looking for on that "not hung-up" system as the Microsoft says. I will gratefully if I WILL KNOW THAT I SHOULD COME BACK TO THE WIN 98, THAT THE XP IS f---ED-ON !!! I spend 3 weeks to find every thing, what was wrong till the moment.

Best regards,

Tweaking the blackice.ini did NOT work for me, and I will report back to share if removing Black Ice does the job for me.

Sys config:
ASUS A7V 133
256 MB
SB Live!
Creative Encore DVD + decompressor(not working under XP :-( )
ASUS 7100 graphics (NVIDIA)
2 UltraATA/100 drives

PS ZoneAlarm suddenly looks attractive, perhaps better than abolishing XP - for the moment

Okey this is how i make it work.
1. I uninstalled NAV 2002.
2. Restart computer.
3. I uninstalled Black Ice Defender.
4. Restart computer.
5. I inactivated all my network, just doubbleklick on it at the taskbar and klick inactivate.
6. I installed NAV 2002.
7. Restart computer.
8. Activate network.
9. Everything is now running smooth for a month, not a single bluescreen.

I get this error about 5 times a day. I uninstalled BlackICE and still gett he error, so I don't think it's that. After going in the Event Viewer (which everyone who hasen't already done should do), I noticed that it has an "acpi" error at exactly the same time it freezes. Here's the exact error:

Event Type: Error

Description:
AMLI: ACPI BIOS is attempting to write to an illegal IO port address (0x74), which lies in the 0x74 - 0x76 protected address range. This could lead to system instability. Please contact your system vendor for technical assistance.

After doing a long search on the acpi error, about 5 forums pointed to flashing the BIOS. After doing so with the latest from Compaq, I was surprised to see the error again after about 2 hours (flashing didn't do anything). I also read that disabling acpi is ignoring the problem and not fixing it, and that it can cause even more problems

...Help me :(

Specs:
Windows XP Home Edition
600MHz Compaq Presario 5000 Series
no vid or sound cards other than those that came w/ the machine
Running:
Norton AntiVirus 2002 (did the uninstall and reinstall like Xdannix did to no avail)
ZoneAlarm Pro (trial)

thnx in advance if ne1 finds a solution

Hello Forum,

Thank you for sharing, The forum has been very helpful the issue we are commonly facing. I have installed WinXP in my desktop and it is running perfectly fine ( no ACPI error mesg or IRQ error mesg ). Not so fortunate with Notebook.

My Notebook has ACPI warning in event viewer as someone has posted in this forum. For some reason, I will only get the above mentioned error messeage, If i have tried to access webcam / usb devices that was removed during hibernation. For example, before hibernation, mouse is attached, and trying to wake it up w/o mouse. The error will come out.

Having problem with my Symantec Systemworks, so need to reinstall my XP, and I got these sudden BSOD IRQL randomly. Trying to install XP three times, and finally got under control now. Seems after you install, when it ask whether you are connected to internet / to LAN, and if you choose Internet, it will give you more problem than the other way around.

Third install on today, I chose connected to LAN and has no problem so far.. but I didn't again install black ice yet. The black ice in my previous XP was very stable and do not cause BSOD. So XP 2.9.cap should not be the reason. It's more to the hardware and winxp incompatibilities or misconfiguration.

Let's share

Hi, I WAS getting a very similar BSOD...
It read as follows:
DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

The word "DRIVER" has not appeared in any of the above message threads.

PC config: AMD slot A, 800mhz
384 MB of pc133 sdram
S.B. live 5.1 Xgamer
Voodoo 3dfx, 16MB AGP
Cable modem

I've been using a legal copy of BlackIce for over 2 years. Am using ver.2.9can.

Turned off reboot PC on error so I could view what the every half hour BSOD screen said.
Added two lines in the B.I. .ini file
After 8 hrs, no more BSOD's!

adapterICE_ADAPTER = true
restart.whenDeviceChg = false

Thanks to all of you, SMO for initial fix.
The Count

Hi ! Same problems on a:

Asus L8400C, 256Mb P3@900
Realtek 8139 NIC, ESS Soundcard, S3 Savage MX 8Mb

After reading this, and talking to a friend, disinstalled BICE 2.9cap. If things lookup, I might retry installing BICE w/ ini file mod.

Haven't had a BSOD since the uninstall so far.

ThanX & peace.

Well, been running for 15 days straight with no BSOD.
I'm glad to hear that the .ini fix for BlackIce had helped someone else out!
YW

I'm so happy that my problem is completely gone!!!!
What a *stress* relief it is.

For those of you with the same config as mine above, make sure you copy and paste my lines "exactly" as they are in my post way up above.
Open the .ini file with notepad, add the 2 lines in, then click File/Save. This way I am sure you overwrote your original file.
BTW, make a backup copy of the original before you try this. Just in case it gets messed up!

I too had these problems. I removed black ice and now it's fine. Zone Alarm has some issues as well. I recomend Sygate Personal Firewall. It is very secure and free for personal use. And best of all no crashes, lock ups, blue screens, or anything. It's great!

I just installed Win XP replacing Win ME and I get this same message but only while playing a 3D type game online (Everquest, Dark Age of Camelot), about every 30 mins. I did not have this problem under ME.

When I went to XP, I upgraded all the drivers before I started any applications. Then I started getting this IRQL error. So I re-formatted the drive, re-installed XP with only Everquest as my other application and used the XP drivers. Still got the same IRQL crash.

I then removed my PCI modem (I have cable through a NIC), and moved the NIC to another PCI slot, but I still got the IRQL crash. Then I removed my Sound Blaster Live! Value sound card and played yesterday online for 14 hours without one IRQL crash. No crashes whatsoever actually.

I have re-installed the sound card in another PCI slot and will see if I have any problems. I have sent a message to Creative Labs.

All I can recommend if you get this error is to upgrade drivers one at a time. Then start moving PCI cards to new slots. Finally, remove some cards and see if anything helps.
