ipod not recognized by computer

CPU/Ram: 2000+/1gigddr2100

I am trying to use a friends Ipod(which he can't get to work). Basically, it's not being recognized by the computer at all. I'm linking it through a pci firewire card. I don't think it is the card, as my DV camera works fine. Also, I can charge the Ipod through the charger and get it to turn on.
