I am trying to set up a second system onto a Linksys Router. I have the first system up and running, but my second system will not release its old IP address. I have tried using ipconfig /release and it does not work. Any suggestions?

I have tried to both manually enter all the fields for IP/DNS/etc....and DHCP enable everything. Neither works. However, I can ping the router when I manually enter the fields.

what IP is it coming up with? a 169 address?
if it is a 169 address, this is the default that windows supplies when a DHCP server cannot be found.
if this is the case, you have to get into the linksys and enalbe the DHCP portion of it. Otherwise... try setting up a static IP (which is a better way to go anyway) try 192.168.0.3 or something like that.

BTW.. to get into the linksys, you have to have the same IP group and subnet. read the manual it will tell you how to setup the DHCP.

take the cable out of the NIC and out of the router. plug it into the router first, then into the NIC.

i've had this problem many times.

I tried both of your guys' suggestions, but neither worked. I don't think its a router problem. I was able to access the router page before connecting the first computer. I cannot even access the internet now by bypassing the router. The access window shows that there is a feed when I hook up to the internet and to the LAN, but when I open internet explorer it comes up with the error window. Any more suggestions would be greatfully appreciated. TIA

i am taking ccna classes at my school and i incountered this problem, in our case we had to buy more ip addres, at the scool we were given 1500 address and as we receved new win xp computers we kept the old ones running still and we began getting the 169 address problem the only solution we cold find was to purchase more address. we tried making static address and all that stuff but you only are allowed so many connections before you need to buy some more.

I talked with my ISP and they said that is not necessary. I was able to file share between computers at the very beginning as well so there has to be something recent that has happened even though I try something and put the settings back to the original way they were set up. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling my ethernet card, I have all lights working on the router indicating there is a computer there and I have read the router manual front to back and tried all suggestions to no avail. Also all drivers are up to date. This is why I think it is an O/S issue and not a router issue since the other computer is working great on it.

Assuming you have the nic settings and IP address set properly in your second PC . ..I am guessing you need to reset your router.
There is a perscribed method where you turn off all the PCs and then power up the router and such but I have found that the paper clip reset can be done while everything is on and works fine.
Before you do that make sure your router is set to include 2 PC's and the IP range that your new PC is set for.

For the network to function the workgroup names need to be the same in each PC as well.

Good luck

Thanks Greaner,

I'll give it a shot. I've tried it before, but you never know if for some reason I did something out of sequence. I've assessed it isn't my NIC card. I've swapped cards and still the same problem. I've tried all my settings in both manual and DHCP mode and that didn't work. I'm really pulling my hair out here since when I hooked everything up originally I was able to connect to the LAN, but not WAN. Once I did get the internet connected then I lost the LAN connection with Computer 2.
