I've come in several times to find a message on my pc. I see this message most times when I access my e-mail. Message says "Windows - System Error There is an IP address conflict with another system on the network." Thoughts on what this message means???

Is your PC networked?

That's a pretty self explanatory message. It means that another computer on the network is configured to use the same IP address as the one on your computer.

try resetting your router and see if that solves it.

The router that I use has a small reset button. Some folks recommend pressing it and leaving the router off for about 10 minutes.

hey epperly3, I forgot to mention something. I hope u don't get scared but in the worst case scenario someone (perhaps your neighbors) are using your high speed connection for free.

Type your router's ip address for more information. I'm pretty sure u should know your own ip address & once in your router u can spot unknown ips. Also try encrypting it.

If my pc were networked I could see the message but as to your question it's a stand alone home unit. I had wondered about the neighbor scenerio and if that could possibly be done but hated to voice that opinion. I'll try checking out the unknown ips as you suggested. If that's the case could I possibly tell which, if any, of my files were looked at? Thanks for the help.

I would definitely call the provider. This is not something you want to see. Obviously. :) Before you call them, run ipconfig and see what your settings are. You can then provide them with a little more detail.

Please post back. I'm curious to see what they say.

Epperly3 try Jennifer's suggestion.

Call your DSL provider & ask to speak to a technician because if you explain your situation to the answeree that person might be totally clueless.

Describe your findings to the tech and juice your story up by saying that someone might be stealing/using your connection for free. That comment from you will make the technician feel interested in your situation and will go to your home and check it out. Most of the times without a fee.

If they do want to charge you demand that they should not charge you and for them to fine the person or persons who were stealing from you.

Thank you all for your suggestions & help. Shortly a tech from outside of my network is scheduled to come and take a look at my pc. Theirs is the same opinion of yours but with a little more defination. This will be done at a cost to me but I'd like to have the findings in my hand before talking to my provider. Again thanks for the help ~ will post results back as soon as I have them.

I'd call the provider before having anyone else troubleshoot it. That's what they're there for. Why pay for someone just to confirm what you already know?
