Hi,
I have cable internet with Comcast and I have a problem with my static IP address and I was unable to connect to the internet. I have tried with both USB and ethernet cards and it did not help. The cable connection in both of the above cases looks fine. IPconfig/renew did not help and I was getting this error:
C:\>ipconfig /renewWindows IP Configuration
An error occurred while renewing interface Local Area Connection : An operation
was attempted on something that is not a socket.
C:\>ipconfig /releaseWindows IP Configuration

Default Gateway . . . . . .I can not re-install the XP as I do not have the recovery CD with me.
Please help.

The 169. IP Address is not a real IP Address. It is the sort of number most network cards set themselves to if they can not see the dns server.
The not a socket error just sounds like the usb drivers arent working properly. Have you tried turning off the cable modem at the wall so it can reboot itself.

try rebooting the computer, if you can't release and renew your ip address. did you hard coded your static ip, subnet mask, default gateway and your dns in your tcp/ip properties?

Yes. I stopped the power supply to the cable modem and computer. I have rebooted the computer after restoring the power to the modem. I did it several times and it does not help. Both the USB cable and ethernet cards are working fine with the same cable modem to one of my old computer.
Thanks.

Thanks for the response.
I did not hard code the IP address and this was set automatically when I started using the cable internet.
regards.

yeah you need to hard code it into the tcp/ip properties, save it and restart your computer. Your ISP should provide this information for you. Let me know when get internet.
