Running diagnostics on my system.
Under network adapters,it tells me my IP
address failed-"Sent 4 packets,lost 4,
100% loss.Request timed out 4 times."
What does this mean & what do I do?
Thx Doug

Is this unit hooked to the Internet directly or is there a router in the mix?

Are you on Dial-Up or DSL or Cable?

If there is a router, simply unplug it for three minutes. The IP will regenerate after you reconnect.

Go to the RUN slot and type CMD.
At the prompt type IPCONFIG and hit the Enter key. This will tell you if your IP is bad.

Type IPCONFIG ? and hit enter to learn all you options.

These suggestions are general, so repost with the answers to those questions.

Sent 4 packets,lost 4,
100% loss.Request timed out 4 times. is the result of a Ping command.

For the information to be useful, you need to know which address the ping statement used.

You can check this from a command prompt. first type Ping 127.0.0.1. This is a local loop-back address that exists on every computer. If this works then it means your Network Interface is working properly and the software is configure correctly.

If it fails you may need to reinstall networking on your computer and possible re-install network drivers.

If 127.0.0.1 checks out, type ipconfig /all. This will give you your IP Address and Gateway address. Ping these and see what response your get.

assuming that you're on a DHCP network:

from the command prompt type:
ipconfig

it should tell you you're network address either 192.xxx.xxx.xxx or 10.xxx.xxx.xxx. or your actual address...

if it does not then check your modem or your local or router firewall settings.

if you have an ip address that starts with or looks like ... 169.xxx.xxx.xxx

type ipconfig/release
then type
ipconfig/renew

hopefull that'll force it

if the problems still exists, check your wire for any defects

hope that helps =)

Hi again,
On DSL,DHCP enabled.
Unplugged/plugged in router.Same.
Did release & renew-I get new IP address
but still fails after diagnostics.
Is it really worth worrying about or not?

AS I said before, you need to know what address the Ping command is using. It might be Pinging some web site that no longer exists in which case there is nothing you can do about it and there is nothing wrong with your setup.

If you type Ping 192.168.xxx.xxx or whatever numbers you get from the ipconfig /renew command and that works then everything is fine.
