ok this is driving my crazy, my computer has been down for about 2 months now because of some stupid hal.dll file. ive tried dee's method on this thread: http://computing.net/windowsxp/wwwboard/forum/4127.html and it still doesnt work, my arc path looks like this "multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)" what does the rdisk mean? because i think that could be my problem or something. ive even tried copying the hal.dl_ file to windows\system32\hal.dll overwriting the hal.dll file and it still does not work. whenever i reboot from the hardware configuration thing i leave the winxp pro cd in as i'm supposed to and it just gives me an error that says...
"Invalid system disk
Replace the disk, and then press any key"
...so i take the disk out, press a key, my system reboots and i get the stupid hal.dll error again. it basically just loops that whole thing over and over again, my hopes arent very high anymore on fixing it. what should i do? please please help me this is very frustrating.

Have you tried looking in Bios to see what Boot sequence it has?
But for mine, I reckon it's a reformat for you.

HI

One of the following is the causes of your problem.

1) There's a non-bootable disk in your floppy drive.

2)IO.SYS file is missing

3)IO.SYS file has been incorrectly renamed

4)HDD has patritions, but they are NOT FORMATTED

5)iT COULD ALSO BE A corrupt io.sys, BUT THIS IS NOT VERY COMMON

try to work out which one of this is the problem & post a message back on here.

Cheers :)

Delete your partition[s] and start over again, some times reformatting leaves remnants of the last install........

Richard in your boot.ini (not positive but it may be) you have "multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)". Have you tried setting the rdisk(1) to rdisk(0)?

go to microsoft knowledge base and search for how to manually force a standard while installing xp 297xxx

basically within first two minutes of loading xp,you press f5 and choose standard hal from list.

youre problem is with the compatibility of you mobo/cpu with xp in most cases a bios update could alternatively fix the issue if available on your manufacturers website.

Rich, at this point (if I understand correctly) you have tried reinstalling XP, so you have no data to lose anyway. My suggestion is to totally nuke your HD and start over. You got to totally clean down the harddrive, so here is my suggestion.

Go here and download CLEARHDD.EXE:

http://www.samsungelectronics.com/hdd/support/faqs/faq_1320.html

Clearhdd is a tiny program (11k) that is low-level and will totally clear your HD of EVERYTHING - data, partitions, logical drives, extended partitions, FAT32, NTFS, LINUX, cats and dogs.
:o)

Drag and drop it onto your WIN98 floppy boot disk. Insert your disk, reboot into DOS through the floppy; Choose Start with CDROM Support.
Type at the A prompt: clearhdd.exe 0 (remember space after .exe) and hit return; it will ask you two (2) times if you really want to do this, hit Y two times. Now your disk is 100% clean of everything, guaranteed.
NOW use fdisk to set your Primary, Active Partition (in this case, your entire disk); do not format this partition. Insert your XP installation disk in the CDROM.
Reboot the computer. It will ask you if you want to start with CDROM support, say Yes. Say yes to large disk support.
After it finishes loading the generic ROM drivers, at the DOS prompt switch to your CDROM drive letter, and type SETUP.EXE;
XP should fire up and start the install process. Now you can format your primary partition with NTFS, and install XP.

I think that you can also use the XP CDROM disk directly to boot and not have to use the WIN98 floppy to set your partition, but sometimes folks have trouble getting the computer to see the ROM, and in some BIOSs you must set the CDROM to First Boot Device.
I personally just use the floppy. I find it faster.

If after wiping your HD, you still have problems, at least you now know for sure that your problem is hardware related, not software.
